The call

Altana sits inside customs enforcement and major shipping lines, but its revenue is unaudited and its growth still tracks U.S. tariff drama.

Altana builds a database of shipping information and uses it to help businesses and the U.S. government track cargo and follow trade rules. Big rival companies like SAP and Oracle cannot easily copy it because their own customers would not trust them to run a neutral system that competes with them, and Altana has a government contract that locks in a key customer. The big wildcard is whether the U.S. government keeps using and expanding this system when tariff policies change, since the company's value is tied to enforcement activity that could slow down if political winds shift.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Frontier LLMs power Altana's own classification tools rather than threatening to replace its trade graph. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Palantir or Sayari building a competing government trade-graph product. Palantir has federal reach and Sayari has trade data, but neither has CBP's product-level identifier contract yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A 600M-company trade graph plus a signed two-year CBP enforcement contract that rivals cannot easily copy or displace.
What would change this call
CBP Global Business Identifier Program expands beyond current pilot scope or renews past two years. Confirms regulatory embedding deepens rather than stalling.
Maersk/Hapag-Lloyd port network grows past 12 ports or adds new carrier partners. Shows network lock-in is compounding, not plateauing.
Palantir or Sayari announces a competing trade-graph deal with CBP or an allied government. Would show a credible rival breaching Altana's regulatory moat.
Key numbers
  • 12 major ports live, ~70% of world trade flows (May 2026)
  • $1B valuation confirmed at Series C close (Jul 2024)
  • Revenue estimates range $23.6M to $66M (2025/2026)
Named risks
  • Demand tightly coupled to US tariff and UFLPA enforcement volatility; policy stabilization could soften compliance-driven buying. Severity: high
  • Revenue figures remain unaudited third-party estimates with no company-confirmed financials. Severity: medium
  • CBP Product Passport program still in active rollout; leadership or funding priority shifts could stall expansion. Severity: medium
  • Founding-year (2018 vs 2019) and valuation (Series C $1B vs later ~$1.3B estimate) discrepancies persist across sources. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Altana profitable in 2026?
Altana has disclosed no audited profitability figures. As a private, venture-backed company that closed a $200M Series C at a $1B valuation on 2024-07-29, its public focus is growth and government contracts, not profitability disclosures.
Who owns Altana?
Altana is privately held and venture-backed, not publicly traded. Investors include Thomas Tull's US Innovative Technology Fund, Salesforce Ventures, GV, and OMERS Ventures. Former Compaq CEO Michael Capellas became Chairman of the Board on 2025-03-27.
Could AI replace Altana?
Unlikely soon. Altana's moat is a proprietary knowledge graph, a US CBP regulatory designation, and live carrier network deployments, not just AI models. CEO Evan Smith said on 2026-06-04 that LLMs 'aren't the right tool for the job' for much of the pipeline.
Who is Altana's biggest competitor?
ERP giants SAP, Oracle, and Blue Yonder overlap adjacently but are structurally blocked from building a neutral cross-enterprise trade graph. Palantir and Sayari are named as potential future contenders in the trade-data space, though no share-taking has been documented.
Did US Customs choose Altana's technology?
Yes. US Customs and Border Protection selected Altana's Product Passport as the product-level identifier under its Global Business Identifier Program and signed a two-year enforcement contract, dated 2025-10-01.
How much funding has Altana raised?
Through its Series C, Altana had raised $322.7M total, including a $200M Series C at a $1B valuation closed 2024-07-29. An earlier Series B raised $100M at a $430M valuation in October 2022.
