The call

Altruist holds a regulated position that keeps generic AI and slow-moving giants out of its core business, while its own profitability path remains unproven.

Altruist holds actual client money and investment accounts, and is licensed by financial regulators to do so, which is something a chatbot or startup cannot easily replicate. The company serves about 5,500 independent investment advisors who are too small for big firms like Schwab or Fidelity to serve profitably, and Altruist's AI assistant Hazel works because it has access to real custodial data that generic AI tools do not. The main question is whether Altruist can actually make money, especially after laying off staff twice in 2025 while promising profitability soon, which is hard to verify from the outside.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. ChatGPT and similar tools can't hold client assets or clear trades, so they can't replace a regulated custodian like Altruist. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Charles Schwab, Fidelity Investments, BNY Pershing. These firms dominate custody assets but avoid building modern tools for small independent RIAs, the segment Altruist serves. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. FINRA/SIPC broker-dealer registration and SEC custody status: a license competitors and AI tools cannot simply copy.
What would change this call
Altruist announces a Series G or a down-round valuation within 6 to 12 months. Would show the profitability path is slipping despite claimed revenue growth.
Fidelity or Schwab launches a modern custody product built specifically for small/independent RIAs. Would show incumbents closing the service gap Altruist currently exploits.
Altruist reports a third layoff round or reduced RIA/AUM growth in 2026 filings or press. Would show burn is not under control and momentum is stalling.

Questions people ask
Is Altruist profitable in 2026?
CEO Jason Wenk said in October 2025 the company has a 'fairly clear path to profitability' after cutting headcount from 460 to 398 via two 2025 layoff rounds (37 in January, about 50 in October). No confirmed profitability figure has been reported since.
Could AI replace Altruist?
No. Altruist is a FINRA/SIPC, SEC-registered self-clearing custodian holding real client assets, a regulatory license generic AI cannot obtain. Its own Hazel AI tool, launched September 2025, depends on Altruist's live custodial data rather than replacing the custodian itself.
Who owns Altruist?
Altruist is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2018 by CEO Jason Wenk. It raised a $152M Series F in April 2025 led by GIC, with Salesforce Ventures, Baillie Gifford and ICONIQ Growth, valuing the company at $1.9 billion.
Who is Altruist's biggest competitor?
Charles Schwab, Fidelity Investments and BNY Pershing dominate RIA custody. Altruist is a distant fourth, though its market share grew from 2.85% to 6.25% in the 2025 T3/Inside Information survey, per InvestmentNews, April 22, 2025.
