Amazon Games
Amazon's game publishing arm, maker of New World and Lost Ark, now retreating from AAA development.
Amazon Games is shutting its own flagship MMO, lost its studio head to Ubisoft, and hasn't produced a lasting hit despite years of funding.
Amazon Games makes video games, but it is stopping. The company closed its main game-making teams in late 2025, is shutting down its big online game New World in early 2027, and has fired hundreds of workers in just over a year. No game Amazon built from scratch ever kept players interested for long. Microsoft and Sony, which run Xbox and PlayStation, make games that millions of people keep playing year after year, so they beat Amazon at this. The one thing that could matter: if the Tomb Raider game that comes out in February 2027 is actually good and players stick with it, Amazon might reconsider walking away completely.
Amazon publicly discloses Luna subscriber counts within the next year. Would show whether Luna has real scale versus Xbox Game Pass or stays unproven.
Crystal Dynamics or Amazon Games announces another layoff round in 2026. Would confirm continued retreat rather than stabilization of the games division.
- New World peaked at 913,634 concurrent players, fell to 400-500
- Lost Ark down ~95% from 1.32M peak to 7,000-25,000 players
- 245+ Amazon Games roles cut across four layoff rounds since Apr 2023
- New World flagship MMO fully shutting down by Jan 31, 2027, ending Amazon's original first party title.
- Crystal Dynamics underwent 4 layoff rounds in 12 months through Mar 2026, threatening Tomb Raider execution.
- Studio head role unfilled since Hartmann departure, leadership instability as of Apr 2026.
- Luna April 2026 no refund removal of purchased games risks consumer backlash.
- Company wide AI driven layoffs at Amazon continuing into Jul 2026 could extend further into gaming.
