Gaming companies
275 companies assessed. 154 of them, 56.0%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.
Gaming is splitting hard between companies that own something players can't get anywhere else and companies that are renting attention one hit at a time. Console and IP owners like Nintendo, Rockstar, Capcom, The Pokemon Company, Games Workshop and Valve barely register any pressure because their worlds, characters or platforms don't have a substitute. NetEase sits in the same safe zone because its scale and live-service machine keeps players inside its games rather than outside them. The losing side is crowded: mid-size Asian mobile and MMO publishers (NetDragon, Kingsoft, Shanda, G-bits, Elex, Colopl, Aiming) watching bigger rivals like Tencent, NetEase, miHoYo and 37 Interactive out-produce and out-spend them, work-for-hire studios (Sumo, Streamline) getting squeezed as publishers insource, and casual hitmakers (Moon Active, Halfbrick, Amanotes) losing their one big game to a copycat with a bigger marketing budget. India's real-money gaming names got wiped by regulation, not competition. The deciding dynamic is ownership: companies that own a franchise, platform or IP nobody else can replicate hold their ground, while companies that rely on a single live-service hit or outsourced labor stay exposed to whoever can copy the format faster or cheaper, increasingly with AI-assisted content production.
