The call

Amperity has real customers and a patented matching engine, but a stale valuation, repeated layoffs, and Niche Player status show the ground shifting under it.

Amperity sells software that helps stores and hotels recognize the same customer across multiple shopping trips and channels by matching their data. The company built a technology called Stitch that was supposed to be hard for competitors to copy, but Salesforce and Adobe already shipped better-known versions of the same product and grabbed customers first. On top of that, Amperity itself laid off half its workforce in mid-2026 because AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can now do the matching and data work that used to require human engineers, which means the core reason customers should have chosen Amperity is disappearing. The biggest sign of trouble is whether the company is losing existing customers (a number called net revenue retention); if that number falls below 100 percent, it means Amperity is shrinking even after firing staff, which would point toward a forced sale or a down-round funding deal that would wipe out investor returns.

Why
01
AI pressure: Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot and similar tools doing identity matching and data engineering. Amperity's own June 2026 layoffs were pinned on AI absorbing the identity-matching and data work that was its core skill. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Salesforce Data Cloud and Adobe Real-Time CDP. Gartner ranks Salesforce as the sole Leader and Adobe as the sole Visionary in the 2026 CDP report, with Amperity stuck as Niche Player. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A patented matching engine called Stitch and deep workflow lock-in with roughly 400 retail and hospitality customers who built processes around it.
What would change this call
Amperity announces a priced funding round, bridge round, or acquisition within 6-12 months. A down round or sale would confirm existing equity is underwater; a strong round would ease pressure.
Amperity's net revenue retention is disclosed or estimated by a third party. Below 100% would show customers shrinking spend despite prior cost cuts.
Next Gartner Magic Quadrant for CDPs (expected 2027) is published. A downgrade below Niche Player would confirm eroding competitive position versus Salesforce and Adobe.

Questions people ask
Is Amperity profitable in 2026?
No profitability figures have been disclosed. Third-party estimate GetLatka pegs 2024 revenue at roughly $45M ARR (as of 2025-11-27), and Amperity has not raised new funding since its July 2021 $100M Series D, suggesting no confirmed path to profitability yet.
Could AI replace Amperity?
Amperity itself attributed its June 2026 layoffs to increased internal AI usage absorbing identity-resolution and data-engineering labor, the exact work underlying its core Stitch product, per GeekWire on 2026-06-25, a rare case of a vendor citing AI as shrinking its own headcount.
Who is Amperity's biggest competitor?
Salesforce Data Cloud, named the sole Leader in Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant for Customer Data Platforms (2026-03-05), while Amperity ranked as a Niche Player for the second consecutive year; Adobe Real-Time CDP was the sole Visionary in the same report.
Is Amperity still worth $1 billion?
Amperity's last confirmed valuation was 'more than $1 billion' from its $100M Series D closed 2021-07-13. As of 2026-07-07, CB Insights shows no newer priced round, making that valuation five years stale with no public confirmation it still holds.
Has Amperity had layoffs?
Yes, repeatedly: a 2023 round, a further cut in January 2024, a 13% layoff in September 2024 (GeekWire, 2024-09-12), and another round in June 2026 tied to AI adoption, leaving headcount above 200 globally, down from roughly 400 in 2023.
Who owns Amperity?
Amperity is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2016 by Kabir Shahani and Derek Slager, who returned as co-CEOs in June 2026. Investors from its 2021 Series D include HighSage Ventures, Tiger Global, Declaration Partners, and Madrona Venture Group.
