The call

Amwell survives on contracted enterprise ties while its video layer gets commoditized by Zoom and its clinical workflow gets absorbed by Epic.

Amwell sells video visit software and patient scheduling to large health insurance companies and hospital systems. It is hard to replace because those customers have signed long contracts and depend on Amwell to connect thousands of doctors and patients every day. But Zoom has become the number one telehealth tool by market share and charges almost nothing, while Epic (the huge medical records software company) is now offering telehealth built right into its own system where doctors already work. Amwell is losing customers and revenue is down about one-fifth each year. The company promised it would make money by late 2026, but that has not happened yet, and the whole future depends on whether that promise comes true or whether customers keep leaving for cheaper or easier options.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI lab directly displaces Amwell yet; management just plugs third-party AI tools into its platform as a feature, not a defense. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Zoom and Epic Systems. Zoom now leads telehealth video by share, and Epic bundles its own telehealth into the health record where doctors already work. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Government and payer contracts like DHA/Leidos and Elevance lock Amwell into workflows that are slow and costly to rip out.

Questions people ask
Is Amwell profitable in 2026?
No. Amwell posted a $95.7M net loss for FY2025 (vs $212.6M in 2024) and guided Q1 2026 revenue down ~18% YoY to $54.9M. Management targets positive operating cash flow only by Q4 2026, a goal not yet achieved as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Amwell?
Partially. AI-driven triage and generic video tools already erode Amwell's basic video-visit business, but Amwell hosts third-party AI as 'open architecture' rather than owning proprietary AI, and its regulated contracts (DHA, Elevance) offer some AI-resistant lock-in as of May 2026.
Who is Amwell's biggest competitor?
Zoom ranked #1 by U.S. telehealth vendor market share as of November 2025, with Amwell #2 at 13.7%. Teladoc Health holds roughly 25% telehealth market share in 2024, making it the larger established incumbent Amwell competes against.
Who owns Amwell?
Amwell (NYSE: AMWL) is publicly traded with no parent company. It IPO'd on September 17, 2020; founders Ido and Roy Schoenberg historically held Class B shares with 51% voting power, and Google/Alphabet took a concurrent roughly $100 million stake at IPO.
Is Amwell's revenue growing or shrinking?
Shrinking. FY2025 total revenue was $249.3M, down from $254.4M in 2024, and Q1 2026 revenue fell ~18% YoY to $54.9M. FY2026 guidance projects further decline to $195M to $205M in total revenue, per the May 6, 2026 earnings call.
What happened to Amwell's stock price?
Amwell stock is down roughly 98% since its September 2020 IPO, as of May 2026. The company executed a 1-for-20 reverse stock split effective July 10-11, 2024, to maintain NYSE minimum-price compliance, and its market cap sat around $180-210M in July 2026.
