Medical technology and health companies
203 companies assessed. 110 of them, 54.2%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.
Medical technology splits hard right now between companies that own a clinical or data workflow doctors and hospitals can't easily rip out, and companies that were just a thinner, more convenient wrapper around something bigger players can copy or buy. Epic, athenahealth, Natera, Medtronic, ResMed, Cochlear, and the Japanese data and network names like M3, JMDC, and Pro Medicus are barely losing ground, because their pressure comes from cycles and policy, not from a rival stealing customers. The damage is concentrated in consumer-facing health services: telehealth brands, urgent care chains, Medicare marketplaces, and data resellers built on thin differentiation. Hims & Hers is swallowing Thirty Madison's categories. JD Health and Alibaba Health are six times the size of 111 Inc and still growing while it shrinks. CVS, Optum, and Humana are buying up the clinics that VillageMD and Cano Health can no longer keep open. Woebot shows the sharpest version of the AI threat: a scripted chatbot got outrun by general AI models and by better-funded enterprise mental health platforms at the same time. The dynamic that decides survival here isn't really AI itself, it's whether a company sits inside a regulated, sticky clinical record or device relationship, or whether it's a standalone app or clinic that a bigger, better-capitalized platform can absorb.

| Woebot Health Maker of a scripted mental health chatbot, now shut down its consumer app and pivoting to enterprise deals | Little protection left |
- Will AI replace mental health apps like Woebot?
- It already has, in effect. Woebot shut down its consumer chatbot app because general AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude do the same conversational job better, and it's now trying to pivot to enterprise deals where Lyra Health, Spring Health, and Wysa already have the relationships.
- Are electronic health record companies like Epic at risk from AI?
- Not based on current evidence. Epic Systems shows no customer loss and is deeply embedded in how large US hospitals run day to day operations, which makes it one of the hardest positions in health tech to displace.
- Is Medtronic losing ground to Intuitive Surgical in robotic surgery?
- Yes in growth terms. Intuitive Surgical holds roughly 70% or more of the robotic surgery market and Medtronic's Hugo system remains a distant second, though Medtronic's broader device business outside robotics isn't losing existing customers.
- Why are telehealth companies like Thirty Madison struggling?
- Thirty Madison, which runs Keeps, Cove, and Nurx, is being outcompeted by Hims & Hers, a rival roughly six times its size operating in the same hair loss, migraine, and birth control categories, and it's heading into a discounted sale.
- Is Fitbit still competitive against Apple Watch?
- No. Apple Watch holds about 23% of the wearables market and is growing again, while Garmin, Oura, and Whoop take the fitness enthusiast segment, and Google has largely let the Fitbit brand fade rather than invest to compete.
- Why are Medicare Advantage clinic chains like VillageMD and Cano Health failing?
- Both are being outcompeted by larger, better-capitalized value-based care operators. CVS's Oak Street Health, UnitedHealth's Optum/CenterWell, and Humana are buying their clinics and absorbing their patients as VillageMD and Cano Health shrink and exit markets.
- Definitive Healthcare's net revenue retention rate moving further below 85%
- Any hospital system publicly announcing it built in-house sequencing rather than using Fulgent Genetics
- Google making a fresh product investment or discontinuation announcement for Fitbit
