The call

Anaconda sits deep inside enterprise Python workflows and is profitable, but Databricks holds the capital and platform reach to build around it if it chooses to.

Anaconda sells a curated library of Python tools and a way for companies to manage which versions their teams use, making money from enterprise customers who need security and compliance records. It is hard to replace right now because 95% of Fortune 500 companies already use it and switching costs money and time, but these aren't permanent barriers. Databricks, which is worth $134 billion and already works with Anaconda as a partner, could build its own Python governance layer into its own platform and start winning customers away, which would be the real threat to watch over the next 12 to 18 months.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI coding tools push more Python usage, which feeds Anaconda's package and governance business rather than replacing it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Databricks. Databricks, now valued at $134B, could build native Python package governance into its platform and stop needing Anaconda at all. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Enterprises already run Anaconda's curated packages and compliance workflows across 95% of the Fortune 500, and ripping that out is costly.
What would change this call
Databricks ships native governed Python package management inside its platform within 12-18 months. Would show Databricks is walking through Anaconda's moat instead of partnering with it.
Q3-Q4 2026 renewal data from mixed R/Python customers after the Nov 2025 R-channel deprecation. Would reveal whether Posit-linked customers are churning away from Anaconda.
Anaconda's ARR growth or profitability figures in its next funding update or press release. Would confirm whether AI Platform monetization is scaling or profitability is eroding.
Key numbers
  • $150M+ ARR, profitable (2025-07-31)
  • $1.5B valuation after Series C (2025-07-31)
  • 21B+ cumulative downloads (2025-10-13)
Named risks
  • Databricks or Snowflake ships native governed Python package management, eroding Anaconda's enterprise governance moat. Severity: high
  • November 2025 R-channel deprecation drives mixed R/Python customers toward Posit during 2026 renewal cycles. Severity: medium
  • New CEO David DeSanto's product strategy fails to execute post-Series C growth plans. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting public headcount figures (300 vendor-stated vs 580 third-party) suggest unclear scaling trajectory. Severity: low
  • Platform consolidation by AI-native giants squeezes standalone tooling vendors like Anaconda out of enterprise budgets. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Anaconda profitable in 2026?
Anaconda says it is profitable with over $150M in annual recurring revenue as of July 2025, a figure it disclosed alongside its Series C funding round that closed July 31, 2025 and valued the company at about $1.5B.
Who owns Anaconda now?
Anaconda remains privately held. Its most recent funding round, a Series C that closed July 31, 2025, was led by Insight Partners with participation from Mubadala Capital, raising over $150M and valuing the company at roughly $1.5B.
Is Databricks a threat to Anaconda?
Databricks is both a partner and a rival. The two companies announced a native integration for governed Python packages in June 2025, but Databricks already has its own Unity Catalog governance layer and reached a $134B valuation after its December 2025 Series L.
Could AI replace Anaconda's package management?
AI coding assistants can automate basic environment setup and dependency resolution, but Anaconda's curated repository of 21B+ downloads and its enterprise audit-log and compliance governance layer are harder for a model to replicate without equivalent curation infrastructure and enterprise trust.
Is Anaconda a good company to join in 2026?
Anaconda reports profitability on $150M+ ARR and appointed a new CEO, David DeSanto, in October 2025 after raising a $150M Series C in July 2025. Headcount reporting is inconsistent across sources, with the company's own site citing over 300 employees.
What is Anaconda's biggest competitor?
Anaconda's most directly comparable rival is Posit (formerly RStudio), which stands to gain customers with mixed R/Python stacks after Anaconda deprecated active maintenance of its R channel in November 2025 to focus on Python.
