Anaplan
Enterprise planning software for finance, sales, and supply chain teams.
On the record
Checkpoint: Reported confidential IPO filing could surface first audited growth and retention data since 2022
The call
Anaplan keeps growing ARR under Thoma Bravo, but AI-native rivals and a possible IPO will test how much its customer lock-in really holds.
Anaplan sells planning software to 2,500+ large companies for budgeting, supply chain, and sales forecasting. It is hard to replace because customers store years of data in it, trust its accuracy for audits, and have long contracts, so switching costs are high. The main risk is that newer, AI-powered competitors like Pigment are trying to win new customers by being easier to use, and if they succeed at selling to big Fortune 500 companies, Anaplan's traditional advantages might matter less than they do today.
Why
01
AI pressure: Pigment (AI-native FP&A challenger). Pigment and LLM copilots attack the modeling interface, not yet the deterministic engine finance teams rely on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: SAP (IBP), Oracle (EPM), Microsoft (Dynamics 365 SCM). SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft bundle planning into their own ERP suites but haven't visibly pulled major accounts from Anaplan. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Multi-year contracts, audit trails, and a calculation engine finance and supply chain teams trust make ripping it out costly.
What would change this call
Anaplan files or confirms an IPO S-1 within 12-18 months. Would reveal true net revenue retention and whether growth is discount-driven.
A named Fortune 500 account publicly switches from Anaplan to Pigment or another AI-native rival. Would show enterprise lock-in is breaking, not just mid-market pressure.
Anaplan Intelligence AI feature adoption reported flat or stalled after June 2026 launch. Would show Anaplan is losing the modeling-UX race to AI-native challengers.

Questions people ask
- Is Anaplan profitable in 2026?
- Anaplan (vendor-claimed) says it hit a 'Rule of 55' profile, growing ARR from about $600M to over $1 billion in the 2.5 years after Thoma Bravo's June 2022 take-private, moving from negative EBITDA to profitable growth, per its own February 20, 2025 announcement.
- Who owns Anaplan now?
- Private equity firm Thoma Bravo has owned Anaplan since closing its acquisition on June 22, 2022, for roughly $10.4 billion ($63.75/share), after renegotiating down from an initial $10.7 billion deal. Anaplan delisted from NYSE (ticker PLAN) at that time.
- Will Anaplan go public again?
- Reuters/The Information reported on January 28, 2026 that Thoma Bravo-backed Anaplan could confidentially file for an IPO in coming weeks, nearly four years after going private in 2022, though no size or valuation target was disclosed and plans could still change.
- Could AI replace Anaplan's software?
- Anaplan CEO Charlie Gottdiener said in a May 18, 2026 Fortune interview that the modeling/UI layer is exposed to LLM disintermediation, but argued Anaplan's deterministic calculation engine and audit trails remain differentiated from probabilistic AI reasoning.
- Who is Anaplan's biggest competitor?
- In FP&A, Anaplan competes with Pigment, Workday Adaptive Planning, OneStream, Board, IBM Planning Analytics, and Vena; in supply chain planning, ISG's May 2026 Buyers Guide named Anaplan, Kinaxis, and Oracle as overall leaders.
- Has Anaplan had layoffs?
- Yes. Anaplan cut staff in June 2023, with WARN notices confirming 103 California layoffs amid reports of 300 to 500 employees globally, tied to Thoma Bravo cost discipline; headcount bottomed at 2,075 in Q1 2024 before recovering to about 2,521 by December 2025.
