Anchorage Digital
Regulated bank that custodies crypto assets for institutions under an OCC trust charter.
Anchorage's charter keeps AI and most banks out, but a chartered rival, an open compliance inquiry, and an old consent order mean the license itself is the thing under watch.
Anchorage Digital is a bank that stores and manages cryptocurrency for big investors and companies, making money by charging fees and offering related services. What made it special was holding a rare federal banking charter designed for crypto firms, which traditional banks and software startups could not quickly copy. However, BitGo just got the same charter and went public on the stock market in early 2026, becoming a well-funded competitor with the same legal permission to operate. The bigger threat to Anchorage is not BitGo itself, but a federal investigation started in 2025 by the Department of Homeland Security that could force the company to lose its charter if serious violations are found. Anchorage's past compliance problems (remediation work from a 2022 enforcement order) make this inquiry especially risky.
OCC issues a second consent order or restricts Anchorage's trust charter activities. Would show compliance problems are recurring, not resolved from the 2022 order.
A large marquee institutional custody mandate is announced for BitGo over Anchorage. Would show BitGo's charter and IPO capital are converting into real customer wins.

- 752 employees, up 39% YoY
- 2025 revenue $84.7 million

- OCC BSA/AML consent order from April 2022 remains under remediation, second stumble could restrict charter.
- BitGo's Jan 2026 NYSE IPO gives a chartered peer public capital to contest marquee mandates.
- Newly launched stablecoins (USDPT, fUSD, USAT) are early-stage with unproven redemption volumes.

- Is Anchorage Digital profitable in 2026?
- No profit figure is disclosed. Anchorage reported 2025 revenue of $84.7 million (Dec 2025) and remains privately held, having just taken a $100 million strategic investment from Tether at a $4.2 billion valuation in February 2026 rather than reporting net income.
- Who owns Anchorage Digital?
- Anchorage Digital is privately owned by venture and institutional investors including KKR, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, a16z and GIC from its $350 million Series D (Dec 2021), plus Tether, which invested $100 million at a $4.2 billion valuation in February 2026.
- Could AI replace Anchorage Digital?
- No. Anchorage holds the only OCC national trust charter granted to a crypto-native firm (since Jan 2021), a legal status AI cannot obtain. Its May 2026 Agentic Banking product with Google Cloud instead treats AI agents as clients needing Anchorage's regulated rails.
- Who is Anchorage Digital's biggest competitor?
- BitGo is Anchorage's closest peer: it also holds an OCC trust charter and went public on the NYSE in January 2026, giving it public capital and visibility to compete directly for institutional custody mandates.
- Is Anchorage Digital in regulatory trouble?
- The OCC hit Anchorage Digital Bank with a BSA/AML consent order in April 2022, and a 2025 report said DHS's El Dorado Task Force opened an inquiry into the bank; that inquiry's status was still unresolved as of mid-2026.
- What is Anchorage Digital's assets under custody?
- Anchorage Digital stated it held over $50 billion in assets under management/custody as of 2024, reported April 2025, spanning clients like the DOJ, BlackRock, Tether, and Binance.
