The call

Anto has a research idea and two credentialed founders, but no data lock, no partner, and no product yet to stand against Evo2 or BioCorteX.

Anto Biosciences builds artificial intelligence tools to predict how bacteria in your gut will change when you take medicines or make lifestyle changes. The problem is that larger companies like BioCorteX already have relationships with drug makers and more resources, and general-purpose AI models from Arc Institute and NVIDIA are powerful enough to do similar work without needing Anto's specialized data. The one thing that matters most is whether Anto's own Darwin model can beat the Arc model at predictions over the next six months, which would prove their focused approach actually works better than the bigger, general-purpose tools.

Why
01
AI pressure: Arc Institute/NVIDIA Evo2 (40B param genomic model). Evo2 already covers all domains of life and Anto benchmarks its own model against it, not the other way around. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: BioCorteX. BioCorteX has a live product, a Google Cloud partnership, and a signed pharma deal with CD Biopharma; Anto has neither. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Founders have real domain access (Broad Institute, Janssen/J&J, Harvard GI) but no locked data or partnership yet.
What would change this call
Anto publishes Darwin-40B benchmark results against Arc/NVIDIA Evo2-40B under third-party evaluation. Shows whether Anto's specialized model beats the general frontier model or is subsumed by it.
Anto announces a signed, named multi-year pharma data-exchange partnership. Shows Anto can match BioCorteX's commercial traction instead of relying on unbuilt data claims.
Anto reports headcount growth beyond its current 4 employees or a new funding round. Shows whether Anto can fund the large-scale interventional data collection its moat claim depends on.
Key numbers
  • Roughly $500K to $1M raised total (2026-06-12)
  • 4 employees at the company (2026-07-23)
  • Evo2 trained on 9.3 trillion nucleotides (2026-03-04)
Named risks
  • Core CausalOmics-10T data moat remains unbuilt and unvalidated with no signed pharma partnerships. Severity: high
  • Frontier model Evo2-40B could extend into microbiome-specific tasks and subsume Anto's core offering. Severity: high
  • BioCorteX and Kanvas Biosciences are years ahead commercially and financially, capturing market attention. Severity: high
  • Team of only about 4 people limits ability to originate 100,000+ interventional trajectories at scale. Severity: medium
  • No disclosed valuation or clear next funding round timeline creates runway uncertainty. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Anto Biosciences profitable?
No. Anto Biosciences is a pre-revenue, seed-stage Y Combinator Fall 2025 startup with no disclosed revenue, customers, or commercial deployments as of July 2026. Its public output is limited to research papers and preprints, not paying contracts.
How many employees does Anto Biosciences have?
Y Combinator's directory lists Anto Biosciences at 4 employees as of July 2026, while a recruiting platform describes the team size as 2 to 10 employees. It was actively hiring a Research Intern in San Francisco in July 2026.
Who founded Anto Biosciences?
Anto Biosciences was founded in 2025 by Arvid E. Gollwitzer, a Broad Institute researcher and ETH Zurich lecturer, and David de Gruijl, who has a background at Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Harvard Medical School Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Could AI replace Anto Biosciences?
Anto's own product is a foundation model, so its risk is being subsumed rather than replaced. Its March 2026 Darwin-7B preprint benchmarks explicitly against Arc Institute/NVIDIA's Evo2-40B, a Nature-published frontier genomic model that could extend into microbiome tasks Anto targets.
Who is Anto Biosciences' biggest competitor?
BioCorteX, a London company founded in 2021, is the closest direct competitor with its 'Carbon Mirror' drug-microbiome-host platform. BioCorteX partnered with Google Cloud in October 2024 and signed pharma partner CD Biopharma in November 2025, putting it roughly four years ahead commercially.
How much funding has Anto Biosciences raised?
Reported totals differ by tracker: CB Insights and Preqin cite about $500K raised as of mid-2026, while Caplight lists $1M total including a VC round dated June 13, 2026. Investors include Y Combinator, Tekedia Capital, and a gumi Inc. subsidiary.
