The call

Aptos keeps its installed base through switching costs while Oracle, SAP, and Manhattan compete hard for the next wave of retailer contracts.

Aptos sells checkout and inventory systems to over 135,000 stores worldwide, bundling tax and compliance rules for each country. Its real strength is that existing customers are locked in by years of setup and training, making them sticky against rivals like Oracle and SAP. The big risk is that new AI tools from companies like OpenAI could let smaller competitors offer similar smart features (like chatbots that help store workers) quickly and cheaply, plus the private equity owner (Goldman Sachs) may want to sell the company within the next few years, which could disrupt focus and investment.

Why
01
AI pressure: Oracle, SAP, and Manhattan building AI store-associate agents on top of frontier models. Rivals are wiring OpenAI/Anthropic-style agents into their POS suites, narrowing the gap Aptos showed off at NRF 2026. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Oracle Retail Xstore, SAP Omnichannel POS, Manhattan Active POS. All three sell competing unified-commerce POS to the same tier-1 retailers Aptos targets for new logos. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 135,000+ stores already running Aptos, with tax and compliance integrations across countries that make ripping it out costly.
What would change this call
Goldman Sachs announces a sale, recap, or exit of Aptos within 6 to 18 months. Would show PE owner is trimming or preparing to offload the asset, echoing the LS Retail divestiture.
Oracle, SAP, or Manhattan ship agentic-AI store-associate features matching Aptos within 12 to 18 months. Would show Aptos's NRF 2026 AI differentiation has been neutralized, risking new-logo pipeline.
Aptos headcount or job postings contract past roughly 10% YoY through 2026. Would show accelerating base erosion beyond the flat-to-declining trend already seen 2023 to 2025.

Questions people ask
Is Aptos profitable in 2026?
Aptos has not disclosed audited financials since it is privately held. In a June 2026 internal blog, Aptos management stated FY2025 'closed very well' and H1 FY2026 was 'ahead of plan,' a vendor-claimed statement with no independently verified figures released.
Who owns Aptos?
Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division acquired Aptos from Apax Partners in a deal announced January 2020 and completed March 9, 2020. Aptos remains a Goldman Sachs Alternatives portfolio company as of the February 2026 LS Retail divestiture.
Could AI replace Aptos's software?
Aptos's core POS, tax and fiscalization infrastructure across 135,000+ live stores is not easily replicated by AI, but its new 'AI Super Agent' features, launched January 2026 at NRF, are UI-layer tools that Oracle, SAP and Manhattan Associates could match within 12 to 18 months.
Who is Aptos's biggest competitor?
Gartner's July 9, 2026 review of unified commerce platforms for tier-1 retailers lists Aptos ONE POS alongside Manhattan Active POS, Oracle Retail Xstore, Shopify POS, Sitoo, comerzzia and Bayretail as directly comparable rivals for the same enterprise accounts.
Is Aptos going public soon?
There is no evidence of an IPO filing or SPAC activity for Aptos as of July 2026. It has been privately held by Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division since the deal completed March 9, 2020, with no public ticker.
What AI features has Aptos launched?
Aptos launched 'AI Super Agents,' including a Concierge Agent, Customer Insights Summary and Advanced Embedded Insights, embedded in its Aptos ONE POS platform at NRF in January 2026, following a GenAI roadmap previewed at NRF in January 2025.
