The call

Arweave has working permanent storage tech that big cloud providers structurally can't offer, but eight years in, demand and token value still haven't shown up.

Arweave stores data permanently on a decentralized network instead of relying on cloud companies like Amazon or Google. The company has built real technical advantages that big cloud providers cannot easily copy because their business models depend on charging monthly subscriptions, not permanent storage. However, after 8 years, users have not adopted Arweave at scale, the token price has collapsed, and newer competitors like 0G and Walrus have launched with faster speeds specifically designed for artificial intelligence workloads, which is where Arweave is now trying to compete. The next 2 to 3 quarters will show whether real software applications and AI agents actually use Arweave's new system called AO, or whether users choose the newer rivals instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: 0G and Walrus (AI-native decentralized storage networks). 0G and Walrus are built for AI training data with higher throughput and are benchmarking directly against Arweave to win that workload. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Filecoin. Filecoin is the larger decentralized storage network competing for the same developers and capital in a still-small market. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its pay-once permanent storage design and endowment model can't be replicated by AWS or Google's subscription businesses.
What would change this call
AO/HyperBEAM on-network dApp and AI-agent usage over next 2-3 quarters. Shows whether real workloads anchor to Arweave or bypass it for 0G/Walrus.
AR token price breaks above $2.10 or falls below $1.80 on volume tied to AO metrics. Confirms whether AO adoption is translating into token demand.
0G or Walrus announce large AI-training-data storage deals or partnerships. Would show rivals capturing the AI-workload niche Arweave is pivoting toward.
Key numbers
  • AR token down ~98% from Nov 2021 ATH of $89 (2026-07)
  • Only ~347 TiB total data stored on network (2026-07)
  • Daily uploads just ~33 GiB, throughput ~105 TPS (2026-07)
Named risks
  • AR token down ~98% from ATH with 93% bearish sentiment as of July 2026. Severity: high
  • AI-native rivals 0G and Walrus benchmarking higher throughput for AI-training-data storage. Severity: high
  • 8 years post-mainnet, absolute usage remains thin (~347 TiB, 33 GiB/day). Severity: medium
  • AO/HyperBEAM AI-agent narrative not yet converting to measurable token demand. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Arweave profitable in 2026?
Arweave is a decentralized protocol, not a conventional company, so it has no disclosed profit/loss statement. Its native AR token traded range-bound near $1.85-2.10 with 93% bearish sentiment as of July 20, 2026, down about 97.9% from its November 2021 all-time high of roughly $89.
Could AI replace Arweave's storage business?
Direct AI replacement risk is low since permanent storage is not a frontier-LLM feature target, but AI-native rivals 0G and Walrus explicitly benchmark higher throughput against Arweave (0G's 30+ MB/s vs Arweave's ~33 GiB/day uploads, per 0g.ai, July 4, 2026), threatening its AI-workload growth niche.
Who owns Arweave?
Arweave is a decentralized protocol founded in 2017 by Sam Williams via Minimum Spanning Technologies Ltd, with mainnet launching June 2018. It has no single corporate owner; governance runs through a foundation-like ecosystem of DAOs and grant-funded contributors, per cbinsights.com, April 15, 2026.
Is Arweave's AR token still crashing?
As of July 20, 2026, AR was range-bound near $1.85-2.10, down roughly 97.9% from its November 2021 ATH of about $89, with 93% bearish technical sentiment, according to ainvest.com's July 20, 2026 report on the HyperBEAM milestone.
Who is Arweave's biggest competitor?
Filecoin is the larger, more established decentralized-storage incumbent in Arweave's category, per blog.walrus.xyz (June 11, 2026). Newer AI-native rivals 0G and Walrus are also shipping higher-throughput alternatives explicitly benchmarked against Arweave for AI-training-data storage, per 0g.ai, July 4, 2026.
Is it safe to build a project on Arweave?
Arweave's core weave and endowment model (targeting ~200 years of storage coverage, per dextools.io, June 15, 2026) are technically irreplicable by new entrants, but total network usage remains thin at ~347 TiB and ~33 GiB/day as of mid-2026, meaning ecosystem traction is unproven despite 8 years live.
