The call

Askul's logistics and account base kept most B2B customers in place through a ransomware crisis, but the same customers can be served by Amazon Business or MonotaRO with no switching wall.

Askul sells office supplies and business goods online to companies and consumers in Japan, delivering items through its own warehouses and trucks. It built real advantages over 30 years: millions of business customers locked into the service and a private delivery network competitors would need to rebuild from scratch. But those advantages are cracking. A ransomware attack in 2026 knocked revenue down 21%, Amazon Business Japan can now offer the same thing without that constraint, and fewer offices even need supplies as work changes. The one thing that matters most is whether Askul's business customers stick around after the cyberattack or switch to Amazon or other rivals during the next year or two.

Why
01
AI pressure: Amazon Business Japan's agentic procurement tools (Alexa+ style ordering). AI shopping agents could pick suppliers by price and speed, sidelining Askul's catalog and brand from the order. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Amazon Business Japan. Amazon Business already sells the same office and workplace goods to Japanese companies, with no barrier keeping it out of Askul's accounts. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 5.2 million registered B2B accounts and 10 owned distribution centers built over 30 years, which held even through a three-week ransomware outage.

Questions people ask
Is Askul in financial trouble?
Yes, by the numbers: Askul posted its first interim loss since its 2000 IPO, a ¥6.6 billion net loss in H1 FY2026 (as of 2025-11-20), and full-year FY2026 sales dropped 16.8% year over year to about ¥400.2 billion, down from FY2025's ¥481.1 billion (as of 2026-05-20). The company also posted an operating loss of about ¥80.9 billion for FY2026, underscoring the scale of the financial strain.
Who are Askul's biggest competitors?
Askul's main rivals are Amazon Business Japan and Kaunet, run by Kokuyo, both of which absorbed stranded B2B orders while Askul's systems were down for weeks after the October 2025 attack. It also trails MonotaRO by scale, with MonotaRO's market capitalization of about ¥918 billion running roughly eight times Askul's ¥110.6 billion as of July 2026.
Is Askul at risk from AI?
Partly. The main AI-related concern is emerging AI purchasing agents that could let corporate buyers place orders directly with suppliers, bypassing Askul's ordering portal entirely, though this threat is still described as 'building' rather than active as of July 2026. Askul's slower recovery from the October 2025 ransomware attack, with FY2026 sales still down 16.8% year over year and an ¥80.9 billion operating loss, leaves it with less financial cushion than larger rivals like MonotaRO to invest in adapting to such shifts.
What is Askul's biggest risk right now?
The biggest risk is that its enterprise and consumer customers do not fully return before competitors lock in the ground they gained during the outage. Sales within the LY Corporation ecosystem (Yahoo Shopping/PayPay) fell about 15.3% year over year even as rival ZOZO grew 7.1% in the same filing period, and a key watch item is whether FY2027 guidance, expected around July 2027, still shows revenue below the pre-attack FY2025 level of ¥481.1 billion.
Is Askul recovering from the ransomware attack?
Recovery is underway but not yet confirmed in the financials. The October 2025 attack leaked over 700,000 data records (as of 2025-12-17) and drove monthly sales down about 95% during the outage, and FY2026 results released 2026-05-20 still show a 16.8% sales decline and an ¥80.9 billion operating loss for the year. Whether Askul resumes dividend payments before the end of FY2027 is one of the clearest markers to watch.
Does Askul have any lasting competitive advantages?
Askul retains an established B2B distribution and delivery network plus deep links into corporate purchasing systems like SOLOEL ARENA, built over decades. However, its market capitalization of about ¥110.6 billion is roughly one-eighth of rival MonotaRO's ¥918 billion as of July 2026, and the October 2025 ransomware attack showed how quickly competitors like Amazon Business Japan and Kaunet could absorb its customers, suggesting its protection beyond scale and customer habit is limited.
