The call

Astera Labs sells picks and shovels for the AI buildout, but over 70% of its revenue comes from one customer that is also building its own chips.

Astera Labs makes connectivity chips that help data centers talk to each other. Right now the company is profitable and growing quickly, with real products already shipped and locked into customer designs. But three big risks stand out: Broadcom and Marvell, which used to own this market, could jump back in anytime they want, and more importantly, Amazon (which buys about 70 percent of Astera's chips) is actively building its own chips in-house and could stop buying from Astera entirely. The company's fate hinges on whether Amazon and other tech giants decide it is cheaper and faster to make these connectivity pieces themselves rather than buy them from Astera.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI data center buildout is the demand driver here, not a predator; more AI servers means more retimers sold. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Broadcom and Marvell. Both already sell competing retimer and switch silicon and have decades of hyperscaler relationships Astera Labs lacks. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Chips are designed into next-generation server platforms years ahead of launch, so switching mid-cycle is costly for customers.
What would change this call
Top customer revenue share falls below 40% across next two 10-Qs. Would show diversification away from Amazon dependency, reducing insourcing risk.
Amazon Annapurna Labs discloses in-house retimer or fabric silicon for next-gen platform. Would confirm hyperscaler insourcing is displacing Astera's connectivity layer.
Broadcom or Marvell announces new PCIe retimer or fabric switch design wins at hyperscalers. Would show incumbents reclaiming share in Astera's core market.

Named risks
  • One hyperscaler generated over 70% of FY2025 revenue, creating extreme customer concentration. Severity: high
  • Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are funding in-house silicon (Trainium, TPU, Maia) that could absorb Astera's connectivity layer. Severity: high
  • Unremediated material weaknesses in internal financial controls disclosed as of Q3 2025. Severity: medium
  • Valuation stretched at P/E ~197 and EV/EBITDA ~301, vulnerable to repricing on growth deceleration. Severity: medium
  • China revenue at 33% of Q3 2025 sales exposes the company to export-control shifts. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Astera Labs profitable in 2026?
Yes. Astera Labs reported FY2025 revenue of $852.5 million, up 115% year-over-year, with net income of $219 million as of December 31, 2025, reversing an $83 million loss the prior year, per company financial results published February 10, 2026.
Who is Astera Labs' biggest competitor threat?
Broadcom and Marvell, which historically held over 80% of connectivity-silicon revenue share as of a March 2024 analysis, are the largest incumbent threats. Marvell reportedly tried to acquire Astera before its 2024 IPO but was rejected.
Could AI replace Astera Labs' products?
No, Astera Labs makes the connectivity chips AI data centers run on, not an AI service itself. The real risk is hyperscaler customers like Amazon insourcing connectivity into custom silicon such as Trainium, which could shrink demand for Astera's retimers and switches.
Who owns Astera Labs?
Astera Labs is an independent public company (NASDAQ: ALAB) that IPO'd in March 2024. It was founded in 2017 in Santa Clara by ex-Texas Instruments engineers Jitendra Mohan, Sanjay Gajendra, and Casey Morrison; no parent company controls it.
How concentrated is Astera Labs' customer base?
Extremely. One hyperscaler accounted for over 70% of FY2025 revenue (about $597 million), and the top three customers made up 86%, per a February 20, 2026 earnings analysis. Q3 2025 filings showed the top four customers at 84% of quarterly revenue.
Is Astera Labs stock overvalued?
By some measures yes: a June 22, 2026 analysis put its P/E ratio near 197 and EV/EBITDA near 301, leaving shares exposed to sharp repricing if growth decelerates. Short interest also rose to 8.25% of float by June 30, 2026.
