The call

AT&T sits behind spectrum licenses and physical fiber that no AI model or startup can route around, while Starlink's satellite mobile plan remains a threat on paper, not yet in customers' hands.

AT&T provides cell service and home internet to millions by owning radio frequencies (spectrum) that the government auctioned to it, plus physical fiber cables buried under 37 million locations. It is hard to replace because new competitors like Dish tried for decades to build a rival network and failed so badly they filed for bankruptcy in June 2026, and because the government limits how many companies can operate a nationwide phone network. The one thing that could change this is SpaceX's Starlink, which plans to offer phone service from satellites starting around late 2026 without needing ground cables or government spectrum in the traditional way, though Starlink has not yet launched this service commercially or proven customers will switch.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI doesn't route around spectrum, fiber, or FCC licenses; AT&T sells the pipes AI traffic runs on, not a product AI replaces. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SpaceX/Starlink direct-to-cell. Starlink grabbed AWS-3 spectrum in June 2026 and plans consumer mobile service, but hasn't shipped or taken a single subscriber yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Finite government-licensed spectrum plus 37 million fiber locations that took decades and billions to lay; nobody builds that overnight.
What would change this call
Starlink direct-to-cell mobile service launches commercially at consumer price parity. Would show satellite broadband finally becoming a real competitor for phone subscribers.
AT&T postpaid churn or net adds worsen for two straight quarters after Starlink launch. Would show satellite competition is actually pulling customers from AT&T.
EchoStar's $23B spectrum sale to AT&T closes or collapses amid Dish's Chapter 11 case. Would show whether AT&T secures added spectrum capacity or faces deal risk.
Key numbers
  • 584,000 fiber/fixed-wireless net adds, best Q1 ever (2026-Q1)
  • Postpaid churn just 0.89% (2026-Q1)
  • $23B EchoStar spectrum deal still unclosed (2026-06-30)
Named risks
  • EchoStar $23B spectrum deal remains unclosed, entangled in Dish DBS Chapter 11 process since June 30, 2026. Severity: high
  • Starlink direct-to-cell could reach consumer price parity and erode postpaid net adds. Severity: medium
  • Data-breach class-action settlement of $177 million covering ~182 million consumers pending final approval. Severity: medium
  • Stock traded near 52-week lows in July 2026 amid analyst downgrades over satellite and cable competition. Severity: medium
  • Confirmed FCC enforcement authority (Supreme Court, June 4, 2026) increases future privacy-fine exposure. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is AT&T profitable in 2026?
Yes. AT&T reported FY2025 revenue of $125.65 billion (up 2.71% YoY) and net income between $21.89 and $23.39 billion as of December 31, 2025. Q1 2026 revenue was $31.51 billion, beating consensus, with EPS of $0.57 versus a $0.55 estimate.
Who is AT&T's biggest competitor?
Verizon and T-Mobile form the 'Big Three' national wireless rivals. Charter Communications, enlarged after its FCC-approved Cox acquisition in February 2026, competes in broadband. SpaceX/Starlink is an emerging threat, having secured AWS-3 spectrum in a June 2026 FCC auction but not yet shipped a live mobile product.
Could AI replace AT&T?
No. AT&T's core business rests on licensed spectrum, physical fiber (37M+ locations as of Q1 2026), and FCC carrier status, none of which AI can replicate. AT&T instead uses AI internally, citing over 80% fraud reduction via H2O.ai and a March 2026 AWS Interconnect partnership for AI workloads.
Is AT&T laying off workers?
Headcount has declined from 149,900 employees in December 2024 to 133,030 in December 2025 per company 10-K figures, continuing a multi-year contraction from roughly 160,700 in 2022, even as the company reports 4,307 active job postings in 2025, up 10% YoY per Revelio Labs.
Who owns AT&T?
AT&T is a publicly traded company (NYSE: T) with no controlling parent; institutional investors hold about 68.8% of shares and insiders hold roughly 0.1%, as of stockanalysis.com data dated July 10, 2026.
Will Starlink take away AT&T's customers?
As of July 20, 2026, Starlink has announced US consumer mobile plans and secured AWS-3 spectrum in a June 2026 FCC auction but has not shipped a live commercial product. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile jointly announced a satellite direct-to-device venture on May 15, 2026 to hedge against this.
