The call

Avantor's installed base and validated materials keep customers from leaving fast, but shrinking organic sales and thinner margins show that base is not growing.

Avantor sells chemicals and equipment to pharmaceutical and biotech labs. It is hard to replace because its products are already baked into customers' FDA-approved manufacturing processes, but that lock-in only protects existing deals, not new ones. Thermo Fisher Scientific, a much larger competitor, is steadily taking market share, and Avantor's own sales have shrunk for two straight years while profits have dropped. The company just replaced its CEO, CFO, and board chair within one year, and it faces a fraud investigation, both of which make it unclear whether new leadership can actually turn things around. The one thing that could change the picture is whether the next two or three quarters show that the company's turnaround plan finally stops the customer losses.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven procurement platforms (e.g. Amazon Business, Jaggaer) automating lab reordering. AI procurement tools could let labs bypass distributor sales reps and price lists, squeezing Avantor's order-taking role. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Thermo Fisher Scientific. Thermo Fisher sells overlapping lab consumables, equipment and services at larger scale, competing directly for the same customers. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its materials are validated inside customers' FDA-approved manufacturing lines, so swapping suppliers means re-validating production, which labs avoid.

Questions people ask
Is Avantor profitable in 2026?
Mixed. Avantor posted a GAAP net loss of $530.2M for full-year 2025 (as of 2025-12-31), but returned to profit with $43M net income in Q1 2026 (quarter ended 2026-03-31). Adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 13.9% in Q1 2026 from 17.0% a year earlier, per its April 29, 2026 earnings release.
Who owns Avantor?
Avantor is a public company (NYSE: AVTR) that IPO'd on May 17, 2019 at $14/share. Originally built by private-equity firm New Mountain Capital after its 2010 Mallinckrodt Baker deal, ownership has since shifted overwhelmingly to institutional investors following the IPO and subsequent secondary sell-downs.
Is Avantor losing market share to Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Signs point that way. Avantor's organic revenue has declined for two straight years, averaging about -2.1% annually through Q1 2026, and FY2026 guidance (issued April 29, 2026) still projects -2.5% to -0.5% organic growth, while larger rival Thermo Fisher faces no structural block to taking share.
Could AI replace Avantor's business?
Unlikely to replace its core function. Avantor's value sits in physical distribution scale, ISO-certified quality processes, and bioprocess materials validated inside customers' FDA-regulated manufacturing lines, largely AI-resistant moats. Avantor itself uses AI internally, including a Decision Intelligence platform with Aera Technology (62 enhancements queued as of Feb 2026).
Is it safe to take a job at Avantor right now?
The paycheck looks stable given ~$6.55B in FY2025 revenue and positive free cash flow ($496M in FY2025), but leadership has churned heavily: new CEO (Aug 2025), CFO resignation (March 26, 2026), new Chief Transformation Officer (May 1, 2026), and a new board chair (Jan 2026), all mid-turnaround.
What is Avantor's biggest competitor?
Thermo Fisher Scientific is Avantor's largest and most direct competitor in lab distribution, described by industry sources as the market leader with Avantor/VWR as the clear number-two player in the US as of mid-2026. MilliporeSigma, Sartorius, and Danaher/Cytiva compete in bioprocessing.
