Biotech tools companies

98 companies assessed. 43 of them, 43.9%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.

The picture

Biotech tools is splitting hard between companies that own physical, sticky infrastructure and companies that only made a clever instrument. The bioprocessing and manufacturing side, Sartorius, Lonza, Cytiva, Samsung Biologics, West Pharmaceutical, is barely feeling any pressure because drug makers cannot easily rip out a filtration system or containment supplier mid-production. The instrument side is a bloodbath. Thermo Fisher and Danaher use their scale to squeeze margins everywhere from chromatography to guide RNA to diagnostics, and 10x Genomics has effectively locked up spatial biology, leaving Vizgen, NanoString, and Singular Genomics fighting for scraps or getting absorbed. Point-of-care diagnostics companies built for the pandemic, Cue Health, LumiraDx, T2 Biosystems, are already gone, their customers absorbed by Abbott, Roche, and Danaher by default. The CRO layer is also getting squeezed as NIH and biopharma budgets tighten and the FDA's shift away from animal testing hits Charles River. The one thing deciding survival here is whether a company's product is embedded in a regulated manufacturing process that can't be swapped, or whether it's a standalone instrument competing against a bigger company's bundle. Embedded wins. Standalone loses unless it has a real technical lead nobody else has closed.

Questions people ask
Will 10x Genomics kill Vizgen and NanoString?
10x already controls about 95% of the spatial transcriptomics market and has extracted royalty payments from NanoString through litigation. Vizgen faces the same dynamic with a patent settlement, so both are fighting from a very small remaining slice of the market rather than growing into it.
Is Illumina losing ground to MGI Tech in China?
Illumina is actively re-entering MGI's China stronghold after a November 2025 export ban was lifted, while US restrictions like the 1260H list and BIOSECURE Act are blocking MGI from federal buyers. It's a two-way squeeze rather than a clean win for either side right now.
Are bioprocessing companies like Sartorius and Lonza safe from AI disruption?
Yes for now. Sartorius, Lonza, Cytiva, and Samsung Biologics show almost no revenue pressure because drug manufacturers rarely switch filtration, bioreactor, or contract manufacturing suppliers once qualified under FDA processes.
What happened to Cue Health and LumiraDx?
Both companies built their business around pandemic point-of-care testing and collapsed once that demand dried up. Cue Health went through Chapter 7 liquidation in 2024, and LumiraDx dissolved after selling its technology to Roche for $353.5 million.
Which genomics sequencing companies are struggling against Illumina?
MGI Tech, Ultima Genomics, and Element Biosciences are all competing on price against Illumina's dominant sequencing platforms, with Illumina defending share through NovaSeq X pricing and its China re-entry after the export ban lifted.
Is Charles River Laboratories in trouble?
Charles River is facing softer demand as the FDA shifts policy away from animal testing, and it's competing with WuXi AppTec, Labcorp, and Thermo Fisher for the same preclinical contracts, putting real pressure on its core testing business.
