The call

Avex is bigger and more profitable than a year ago, but much of the jump came from a one-time asset sale, and the underlying label business still competes for the same artists and deals as three much larger rivals.

Avex owns music catalogs, manages artists like XG, and publishes songs globally for a $100 million fund. It competes directly with much bigger companies like Sony Music, Universal Music, and Warner Music Japan, which have more money and artists, so Avex is not hard to replace. The real question is whether Avex can grow its profit steadily after 2025, and whether its success with XG's huge tour can happen again with new artists, or if that was just one lucky break.

Why
01
AI pressure: Suno, Udio. AI song generators threaten cheap commodity tracks and sync placements; Sony's suit against them could reset catalog value either way. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Sony Music Japan, Universal Music Japan, Warner Music Japan. Three much larger labels compete for the same domestic artists, playlists, and licensing deals Avex needs to grow. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Long-run artist contracts, Japanese distribution relationships, and a growing global act (XG) that took years to build and can't be copied overnight.
What would change this call
Avex's FY2027 interim filing (around Nov 2026) shows Music segment operating profit ex-Sanrio gain. Whether Avex's margin gains are durable or were a one-time accounting boost.
Sony v. Suno/Udio summary judgment ruling (expected 2026). Whether AI-generated music undercuts the value of Avex's catalog and licensing model.
Launch and touring traction of successor acts VIBY or ONE OR EIGHT within 18 months. Whether Avex's global growth depends on XG alone or can be repeated with new acts.
Key numbers
  • FY2026 revenue $971M, up 11.3% YoY (2026-05-14)
  • Music segment profit swung to ~$23M from ~$8M loss (2026-05-20)
  • Net income up 212.1% YoY, boosted by Sanrio sale (2026-05-14)
Named risks
  • Group net margin remains thin (~2.4%), limiting pricing power against larger rivals. Severity: medium
  • FY2026 profit surge driven substantially by one-time Sanrio JV sale gain, not core operations. Severity: high
  • AI copyright litigation outcomes (Sony v. Udio, publishers v. Anthropic) could reset catalog licensing economics. Severity: medium
  • XG's global success may be a single-franchise story without a proven successor act. Severity: medium
  • No structural barrier prevents Sony, Universal, or Warner from replicating Avex's global expansion playbook. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Avex profitable in 2026?
Yes. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Avex reported net income attributable to shareholders up 212.1% year over year to about $24 million (¥3,553 million), on record consolidated net sales of ¥146.6 billion ($971 million), up 11.3% YoY, per its May 14, 2026 filing.
Could AI replace Avex?
Not easily. Avex's core value, artist development, touring, and licensing (e.g. XG's 35-city tour, Bruno Mars publishing deal) is relationship-driven and AI-resistant, but commodity music generation tools like Suno and Udio threaten lower-tier production; Sony sued Udio in July 2026 seeking $4.5 billion over 30,117 recordings, a fight affecting the whole sector.
Who is Avex's biggest competitor?
Sony Music Entertainment Japan, Universal Music Japan, and Warner Music Japan are Avex's direct rivals for artists and catalogs; as of May 2026 reporting, Avex is described as Japan's #2 domestic label behind Sony and Universal, competing without a structural moat against their far larger capital bases.
Who owns Avex Inc.?
Avex Inc. is a publicly traded company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market under ticker 7860 (confirmed February 2026 filing). Founder Max Matsuura remains Chairman, while Katsumi Kuroiwa serves as Representative Director, President and CEO; no single controlling shareholder is disclosed in recent filings.
How big is Avex's XG global tour success?
XG, Avex's girl group, completed its first world tour across 35 cities drawing over 400,000 attendees and reached about 5.91 million monthly Spotify listeners, roughly 80% located outside Japan, according to reporting dated May 20, 2026.
Was Avex's 2026 profit jump a one-time event?
Partly. In December 2025 Avex revised its FY2026 profit forecast upward from ¥1.2 billion to ¥2.8 billion, an increase largely attributed to an extraordinary gain from selling its 30% Sanrio Southeast Asia joint venture stake for $10.7 million, not purely from operating performance.
