Broadcast and traditional media

The picture

Broadcast and traditional media is splitting into two very different groups. Companies that own something nobody else can replace, a mandatory license fee, a music catalog, a wrestling promotion, Formula 1 rights, live venues, are barely losing ground. Universal Music Group, Liberty Media, Madison Square Garden, and Japan's big publishers like Shueisha and Shogakukan keep their pressure scores low because AI tools and streaming apps can't reproduce what they own. On the other side, anyone whose business depended on people clicking through search results or watching linear TV ads is getting squeezed hard. BuzzFeed, Reach plc, Dotdash Meredith, and Vox Media all show high pressure because Google's AI Overviews now answer questions on Google's own page instead of sending traffic onward. Cable networks like AMC and radio groups like Cumulus face the same fate from streaming and AI-driven media planning that skips their format entirely. Public broadcasters such as NHK, CCTV, and the ABC hold steady thanks to guaranteed funding, even as younger viewers drift to short video. The one thing that decides survival here is whether a company's value sits in content people must come to it for, or in traffic it was borrowing from someone else's search engine.

Questions people ask
Will traditional TV broadcasters survive streaming and AI?
It depends heavily on funding model. Public broadcasters like NHK, CCTV, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation are holding up because they don't rely on ad clicks, while commercial free-to-air players like Nine Entertainment, TVB, and MNC Group are losing ad dollars and viewers to streaming and search competitors.
Are newspapers dying because of AI?
Newspapers reliant on Google search traffic are struggling the most, with Reach plc and Mainichi Shimbun both showing high pressure scores as AI Overviews and answer engines like Perplexity intercept readers before they reach the paper's own site.
Which music companies are safest from AI disruption?
Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group both benefit from owning catalogs and artist deals that streaming platforms must pay to license, though Warner shows more pressure since independent artists using DistroKid and TuneCore have pulled major-label streaming share from 87% down to about 72%.
Why is Cumulus Media struggling?
Cumulus just emerged from bankruptcy and faces pressure from Spotify, YouTube, and SiriusXM pulling listening time away, plus AI media-planning tools that skip radio entirely when allocating ad budgets.
Are cable networks like AMC finished?
AMC Networks is showing high pressure at 8 with its streaming subscriber base falling from 12.4 million to around 10 to 10.4 million as Disney, Netflix, Amazon, and Peacock pull viewers away, though it hasn't collapsed outright.
Which media companies are seeing revenue actually lost to AI search tools?
BuzzFeed, Reach plc, Dotdash Meredith, and Vox Media all cite Google's AI Overviews or AI answer engines like Perplexity and ChatGPT as directly cutting the search traffic their ad and subscription revenue depends on.
