The call

Aztec has real cryptographic depth and a live network, but bigger, better-funded rollups are racing to offer good-enough privacy to the same institutional buyers.

Aztec Network is a blockchain that hides transaction details using advanced math (zero-knowledge proofs). It launched in November 2025 with real users and about $1.2 billion in locked funds. The company is hard to copy because it invented some of the core technology and has top cryptography researchers, but it is being copied: bigger blockchains like zkSync and StarkNet are adding privacy features too and already have more money locked in them (zkSync has $3.5 billion). The thing that matters most is whether banks and institutions will pay extra for Aztec's native privacy approach, or just use the privacy add-ons on those larger, richer chains, which would shrink Aztec to a niche player.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. This is a cryptography and protocol design problem, not a workflow AI models currently replace. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: zkSync (Matter Labs) and StarkNet, general-purpose rollups adding privacy features for banks. zkSync landed Deutsche Bank's Project Dama 2 and has 3x Aztec's TVL, threatening to grab institutional privacy demand first. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep-in-the-stack encrypted execution and a research team including PLONK co-inventor Zac Williamson and Chief Scientist Ariel Gabizon.
What would change this call
zkSync or StarkNet announce a second Deutsche-Bank-tier institutional privacy client within 12 months. Would show general-purpose L2s can absorb Aztec's target institutional market before it locks in.
Aztec's V5 mainnet suffers a publicized exploit or critical bug during its first months live. Would show the newly shipped network is not yet stable enough for privacy-sensitive users.
AZTEC token price and 30-day volatility trend over the next two quarters. Would show whether sequencer/prover economics stabilize or keep deteriorating.
Key numbers
  • ~$1.2B TVL vs zkSync's ~$3.5B (2026-07)
  • AZTEC token down 60%+ from February 2026 ATH (2026-07)
  • Token sale raised ~$60.8M at ~$486M pre-money valuation (2025-12)
Named risks
  • AZTEC token down over 60% from Feb 2026 ATH, straining token-funded sequencer/prover economics. Severity: high
  • V5 alpha (shipped 2026-07-21) explicitly flagged by company as expecting critical bugs. Severity: high
  • Larger TVL rivals zkSync/StarkNet capturing institutional privacy demand before Aztec builds sticky app ecosystem. Severity: high
  • Reputational fallout from June 2026 exploits on deprecated Aztec Connect/2.0 contracts. Severity: medium
  • Regulatory scrutiny of privacy-preserving crypto infrastructure, akin to Tornado Cash precedent. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Aztec Network profitable?
Aztec Network does not report traditional company revenue; as a protocol it earns via network fees and staking, not disclosed profit. Aztec Labs remains venture and token-sale funded, with total funding reported at $179M as of 2026-07-20 per Messari.
Is Aztec Labs doing layoffs?
No layoffs are reported. Headcount was 67 as of May 2025, and in May 2026 Aztec Labs grew via acquisition, absorbing Obsidion Labs (ZKPassport) founders and team, suggesting expansion rather than cuts.
Could AI replace Aztec Network's work?
Unlikely. Aztec's core value is cryptographic protocol engineering, zk-proof design, and the Noir language, led by PLONK co-inventor Zac Williamson and Chief Scientist Ariel Gabizon, work not replicable by generative AI as of 2026.
Who is Aztec Network's biggest competitor?
General-purpose zk-rollups zkSync, StarkNet, and Scroll, which collectively hold about $3.5B TVL versus Aztec's ~$1.2B (2026-02-18). zkSync was chosen by Deutsche Bank for its Project Dama 2 institutional privacy settlement, per a 2026-02-18 report.
Who owns Aztec Network?
Aztec Labs Ltd, a London-headquartered private company, builds the protocol, stewarded partly by the nonprofit Aztec Foundation launched February 2025. The network also has a public AZTEC token, launched via TGE on 2026-02-11.
Has Aztec Network been hacked?
Deprecated legacy contracts, Aztec Connect and the original Aztec 2.0 rollup, were exploited for a combined ~$2.2 to $4.35M between June 14 and 18, 2026. Aztec Labs said it had renounced admin control over Aztec 2.0 since April 2024 and the live network was unaffected.
