The call

Barracuda holds SMB customers through channel habit and switching friction, while Microsoft's bundling and AI-native rivals chip at the edges and KKR's exit clock ticks louder.

Barracuda sells email and network security tools, mainly to small and medium businesses through reseller partners called MSPs. Microsoft is making it harder to compete by bundling similar protections into Microsoft 365, and newer companies like Abnormal Security and Sublime Security are winning deals with AI-powered threat detection. The biggest question is not whether Barracuda's products will improve, but when and how KKR will sell the company, which matters far more to investors than anything the product team does. A string of serious security flaws in Barracuda's own systems (most recently in December 2025) also raises questions about whether customers will stick around or switch to competitors they trust more.

Why
01
AI pressure: Abnormal Security, Sublime Security, Material Security. AI-native email security tools read behavior patterns better than Barracuda's filters, and MSPs are testing the switch. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft 365 Defender. Microsoft bundles Defender into 365 licenses many customers already pay for, undercutting Barracuda on price and convenience. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. MSP channel relationships and appliance lock-in make switching costly, even if the product isn't the best on the market.
What would change this call
News of MSP partners publicly switching to Abnormal, Sublime, or Microsoft bundles within 12 months. Would show Barracuda's channel moat is breaking down.
Confirmation or denial of a KKR sale, refinancing, or IPO process for Barracuda. Would show whether the PE exit is proceeding on a favorable or distressed timeline.
Reports of active exploitation tied to the December 2025 CVSS-10 RMM vulnerabilities. Would show whether the 2023 breach pattern is repeating.

Questions people ask
Is Barracuda Networks profitable in 2026?
Barracuda does not disclose financials as a private, KKR-owned firm. It claims (vendor-claimed) 'record-breaking revenue and profitability' under former CEO Hatem Naguib through 2025, per its September 24, 2025 CEO transition announcement, but no specific figures were released.
Who owns Barracuda Networks?
KKR has owned Barracuda Networks since completing its acquisition from Thoma Bravo on August 16, 2022, in a deal reported at roughly $4 billion. Thoma Bravo had taken it private in February 2018 after a ~$1.6 billion buyout.
Could AI replace Barracuda's email security products?
AI-native rivals like Abnormal Security, Sublime Security, and Material Security, plus Microsoft's bundled 365 Defender, are targeting Barracuda's core spam/phishing filtering and tier-1 SOC triage workflows with API-native, gateway-free detection, pressuring its legacy appliance-based model as of 2026.
Who is Barracuda Networks' biggest competitor?
Microsoft's bundled 365 Defender is the largest structural threat since it's already inside customer environments, while Proofpoint intensified direct competition by relaunching a unified SEG+API architecture in March 2026 and acquiring Hornetsecurity in late 2025.
Has Barracuda Networks had major security vulnerabilities recently?
Yes. In December 2025 Barracuda disclosed a critical RMM/Service Center CVE cluster (CVE-2025-34392 through -34395), one rated CVSS 10.0, patched in RMM version 2025.1.1, followed by a February 2026 privilege-escalation flaw, CVE-2026-22676, echoing its 2023 ESG zero-day exploited by nation-state actors.
Will Barracuda Networks be sold again or go public?
No sale or IPO has been announced as of July 2026. Barracuda is approaching its fourth year under KKR ownership since the August 2022 acquisition, inside the typical 5-7 year private equity hold window, making an exit event a plausible near-term watch item rather than a confirmed plan.
