The call

A regulated, capital-heavy chemistry and seeds business where AI reshapes how much product farmers buy, not who is allowed to sell it.

BASF Agricultural Solutions makes pesticides, seeds, and farming advice software for farmers around the world. It is difficult to copy because governments take 10+ years to approve new pesticides, the company owns valuable plant genetics, and it runs its own factories, plus farmers trust BASF brands. The main threat is free or cheap AI software that tells farmers when to spray and which pests are coming, but BASF is already building its own AI tool called xarvio to compete with startup apps. What could shift everything: if BASF splits off as its own public company in 2027 and investors lose confidence, or if farmers switch to newer AI-powered farming apps that work better than xarvio.

Why
01
AI pressure: John Deere's See & Spray (AI computer-vision weed detection). AI-guided spot-spraying lets farmers use less herbicide per acre, chipping at the volume BASF's chemistry business depends on. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Bayer Crop Science (Climate FieldView). Bayer's FieldView competes directly with BASF's own xarvio for the same digital-advisory farmer relationship. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. New active ingredients need ~10 years and roughly 250 million euros of regulatory trials across 100+ countries, a wall AI and startups cannot skip.
What would change this call
BASF's fungicide sales trend in FY2026 results versus Bayer and Syngenta fungicide lines. Would show whether fungicide share loss is competitive or market-wide.
Agricultural Solutions IPO occurs on Frankfurt exchange by mid-2027 as planned. Would confirm the standalone equity path is on track rather than stalling.
xarvio reported subscriber or hectare count in BASF's 2026 disclosures versus 2025's 130,000 users. Would show whether AI-native precision-ag rivals are pulling users away.

Questions people ask
Is BASF Agricultural Solutions profitable?
Yes. EBITDA before special items rose to €2,081 million in 2025 from €1,938 million in 2024, with margin improving to 21.7% from 19.8%, even as segment sales fell 2.2% to €9,587 million, as of 2025-12-31.
Will BASF Agricultural Solutions IPO and when?
BASF is targeting a Frankfurt listing for Agricultural Solutions by mid-2027, valuing the unit at over €20 billion and retaining a majority stake; Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs were engaged as of 2026-07-17, though timing is market-conditional.
Who is BASF Agricultural Solutions' biggest competitor?
Bayer Crop Science, Syngenta, and Corteva are its closest rivals. Together the four majors controlled about 61% of the global pesticides market and 56% of commercial seeds as of 2023, per a GRAIN/ETC Group estimate.
Could AI replace BASF Agricultural Solutions?
Not core chemistry or seeds. A new active ingredient costs about €250 million and 10+ years to clear 100+ national regulatory regimes. AI mainly threatens the thin agronomic-advisory layer, which BASF itself covers via its xarvio platform.
What is xarvio and how big is it?
xarvio is BASF's digital farming advisory platform. As of November 21, 2025, it had more than 130,000 signed-up farmers and consultants covering over 20 million hectares worldwide, per BASF's own (vendor-reported) figures.
Is BASF Agricultural Solutions' revenue declining?
Segment sales fell to €9,587 million in 2025 from €9,798 million in 2024, the third straight annual decline, driven mainly by a 3.9% currency headwind that offset 3.0% volume growth; 2026 guidance points to slightly lower EBITDA.
