Food tech and alternative protein

116 companies assessed. 60 of them, 51.7%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.

The picture

Food tech in the AI era splits into two very different stories. The commodity giants that move grain, meat, palm oil, and fertilizer, Cargill, Bunge, Nutrien, Yara, Sime Darby, COFCO, are barely touched. They own land, ports, ships, and decades of farmer relationships that no software or lab breakthrough replaces overnight, so their pressure scores sit low even when peers compete hard for the same buyers. The real casualties sit in the part of the sector that promised to reinvent food from scratch: plant-based meat, cultivated meat, precision-fermentation dairy, and vertical farming. Beyond Meat, Meati Foods, Believer Meats, Bowery Farming, AppHarvest, Freight Farms, Benson Hill, Infarm, Motif FoodWorks, and AgBiome have all either shut down, sold off assets, or are bleeding volume, because their products never got cheap enough to beat conventional supply chains at the register. Even the fermentation-dairy players still standing, Perfect Day, Remilk, Nature's Fynd, are fighting each other for the same handful of B2B deals while funding dries up. Meanwhile in Asia, scale itself decides winners inside meat and dairy: Muyuan outproduces New Hope on hogs, Yili just overtook Feihe on formula share. The dynamic that decides everything here is simple: whoever can make food cheaper at real volume keeps customers, and whoever can't runs out of cash first.

Questions people ask
Is Beyond Meat going to survive?
Its volume dropped 19.5% in Q1 2026 as Tyson, Hormel, and Cargill's own plant-based lines eat into the same shrinking category. Nothing in its recent numbers points to a turnaround yet.
What happened to vertical farming companies like AppHarvest and Bowery Farming?
Both went out of business. Bowery Farming shut down in November 2024 after its greens cost $16 a pound against $6 for Dole and Fresh Express, and AppHarvest liquidated in Chapter 11 with its greenhouses sold off to Bosch Growers and Mastronardi Produce.
Is lab-grown meat still happening?
Believer Meats shut down after burning $390 million without selling a single product, showing how hard commercial cultivated meat has been to reach. No cultivated meat company in this group has proven it can sell at scale.
Why did Meati Foods and Benson Hill go bankrupt?
Meati's mycelium protein venture collapsed into a shell company in 2025, and Benson Hill went through Chapter 7 liquidation, both cases where funding ran out faster than the business could prove itself, not because a named competitor stole their customers.
Who is losing in China's pork and dairy industry?
New Hope Liuhe is losing ground to Muyuan Foods and Wens Foodstuff on hog volume, and China Feihe just lost its six-year lead in infant formula to Yili Group in the first half of 2025.
What is the safest bet in food tech and alternative protein right now?
Nothing in the group carries the alternative-protein label with strong footing yet. The steadiest positions belong to traditional commodity and agribusiness players like Cargill, Bunge, Nutrien, and Sime Darby Plantation, all with low pressure and no documented customer losses.
