The call

Basis keeps agencies through billing lock-in while PubMatic, LiveRamp, and its own Compass tool race to automate the planning work built on top of it.

Basis Technologies helps ad agencies plan and buy ads across the internet, and it has been around for 25 years with customer billing systems that are hard to switch away from. The problem is that AI tools like PubMatic and others are now doing the planning and bid-buying work automatically, which used to be what made Basis different from competitors. By 2027, the real question is whether agencies stay because they are locked into Basis's billing software, or whether they leave once the AI tools everywhere do the same job and price becomes the only reason to choose Basis over The Trade Desk or a cheaper option.

Why
01
AI pressure: PubMatic AgenticOS and LiveRamp's agentic orchestration tools. Agentic AI automates campaign planning and bidding, turning Basis's UI layer into a commodity across the whole DSP category. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: The Trade Desk. The Trade Desk's scale and its own agentic push could pull agencies off Basis entirely if planning becomes fully automated. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Billing and reconciliation workflows tied to direct publisher relationships make switching costly, even as planning tools commoditize.
What would change this call
Digiday's post-June 2026 DSP scorecard shows Basis share vs StackAdapt, Viant, TTD. Reveals whether Basis is actually losing agencies to rivals or holding steady.
Compass agentic tool adoption and feature parity vs PubMatic AgenticOS, LiveRamp by late 2026. Shows if Basis differentiates or becomes a me-too tool competing on price.
Basis reports flat or declining revenue/customer counts in 2026-2027 press or filings. Would indicate billing/reconciliation lock-in isn't offsetting planning-layer commoditization.
