The call

Believer Meats got the regulatory approvals cultivated meat needed, then ran out of money before selling a single product.

Believer Meats made lab-grown meat and was the first company to get U.S. government approval to sell it (FDA and USDA both said yes in 2025). The company ran out of money before it could prove the business actually worked, and its biggest investor pulled out right before Thanksgiving 2025, forcing the whole company to close and lay off everyone. The real question now is whether someone else will buy the factory and technology at auction in August 2026, or if the equipment just gets sold for scrap; that answer will tell us if lab-grown meat gets a second chance or if the whole idea stops for a while.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI had no role here: Believer Meats died from cash burn and zero sales, not from any AI product or agent. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No big company pushed it out; its largest investor simply pulled funding weeks before Thanksgiving 2025. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. None left for the company itself; its FDA and USDA clearances only have value now as assets for whoever buys the IP.

Questions people ask
Is Believer Meats still operating in 2026?
No. Believer Meats ceased operations in early December 2025 after its entire staff was laid off. It entered US receivership in February 2026 and Israeli bankruptcy proceedings in January 2026, with only its board of directors remaining, per a local Wilson NC official on 2025-12-19.
Did Believer Meats ever sell cultivated meat commercially?
No. Despite winning an FDA No Questions Letter in July 2025 and USDA label/facility approval on 2025-10-31, making it the first large-scale US-cleared cultivated meat producer, Believer Meats shut down in December 2025 having never generated commercial sales revenue.
Why did Believer Meats collapse?
Believer Meats raised about $390 million but its largest investor withdrew just before Thanksgiving 2025. With zero commercial revenue and unproven unit economics, the company laid off its entire workforce and ceased operations by mid-December 2025.
Who is buying Believer Meats' assets?
UPSIDE Foods filed a $50 million stalking horse bid on 2026-06-29 for Believer Meats' North Carolina production facility. Separately, an Israeli trustee is auctioning the company's IP, with bids due 2026-08-05 and a sale hearing set for 2026-08-20.
Is it safe to take a job at Believer Meats?
No, the company no longer has employees. Believer Meats laid off its entire staff in late November to early December 2025 and ceased operations; a local official said on 2025-12-19 that only the board of directors in Israel still exists.
Could AI have replaced Believer Meats' technology?
No. Believer Meats' core process was physical bioreactor and cell-culture manufacturing, not software, and its 2024 process partnership was with industrial equipment firm GEA, not an AI vendor. The company's collapse was driven by capital exhaustion, not AI disruption.
