The call

Benson Hill, Inc. went through Chapter 11 and then Chapter 7, shareholders wiped out, its genetics and AI breeding assets now sit inside Confluence Genetics.

Benson Hill used artificial intelligence and genetic data to breed crops with higher protein content, mainly soybeans for the plant-based food industry. The company could not compete because Corteva, Bayer, and Syngenta already control how seeds reach farmers, and those giants started chasing the same high-protein soybean market themselves, while Benson Hill's costs were too high to survive. The company filed for bankruptcy in March 2025, sold its assets to a smaller competitor called Confluence Genetics in May, and shut down completely by September, leaving shareholders with nothing.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI wasn't what killed Benson Hill; its own CropOS AI breeding platform was an asset, not the failure point. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Corteva and Bayer, working with Bunge on higher-protein soybean genetics. Corteva and Bunge are developing higher-protein soybean genetics that overlap Benson Hill's specialty niche and control grower distribution. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None for the legacy company; it liquidated. Successor Confluence Genetics holds the germplasm and CropOS assets but hasn't proven a paying market.
What would change this call
Confluence Genetics announces a signed multi-year offtake with a food or feed major within 18 months. Would show the specialty soybean demand thesis survives under new ownership.
Corteva or Bayer/Bunge commercialize high-protein soybean varieties at scale in 2025-2026. Would show incumbents capturing the niche Benson Hill targeted.
Confluence Genetics launches the herbicide-tolerant GM soybean variety originally targeted for 2025-2026. Would show the acquired germplasm and CropOS assets are being commercialized post-bankruptcy.

Questions people ask
Is Benson Hill still in business in 2026?
No. Benson Hill, Inc. filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 20, 2025, sold its assets to Confluence Genetics LLC on May 23, 2025, and the remaining estate converted to Chapter 7 liquidation on September 23, 2025. The legal entity is defunct; shareholders received zero distributions.
Who owns Benson Hill's technology now?
Confluence Genetics LLC, a new private company backed by Expedition Ag Partners, S2G Investments, Steve Kahn and ProAgInvest, bought Benson Hill's 350-plus patents, CropOS breeding platform and Creve Coeur, Missouri facility in a court-approved sale that closed May 23, 2025.
Why did Benson Hill go bankrupt?
Benson Hill burned cash for years (FY2023 net loss around $111 million) while the alternative-protein market it targeted collapsed. It sold processing plants in 2023 to 2024, furloughed 43 staff in February 2025, then filed Chapter 11 on March 20, 2025 with $137.5 million in assets against $110.7 million in debts.
Could AI have saved Benson Hill from failure?
AI was Benson Hill's product, not its threat. Its CropOS machine-learning breeding platform reportedly cut variety commercialization time from about 8 years to 5, but the company still failed from capital burn and collapsing alt-protein demand, filing Chapter 11 on March 20, 2025.
Who is Benson Hill's biggest competitor?
Bayer, Corteva and Syngenta dominate seed distribution and grower relationships that Benson Hill could never crack at scale. Corteva was already pursuing higher-protein soybean genetics with Bunge as of June 2023, directly overlapping the specialty niche Benson Hill (now Confluence Genetics) occupied.
What happened to Benson Hill's stock and shareholders?
Nasdaq suspended Benson Hill (BHIL) trading on March 27, 2025, and delisting was announced July 2, 2025. OTC shares (BHILQ) fell to about $0.01 by late 2025, and the Chapter 7 conversion on September 23, 2025 left shareholders with no distributions.
