The call

Betterview holds carrier relationships and imagery infrastructure, but ZestyAI is out-shipping it on AI features while Thoma Bravo's exit timeline hangs over the team.

Betterview takes pictures from airplanes and uses AI to analyze them for insurance companies, helping underwriters assess property risk faster. It is moderately hard to copy because building and flying cameras costs real money, and training AI models on that imagery takes time, but a smaller rival called ZestyAI is already winning over half of the top fifty insurers with smarter AI tools that Betterview has not matched yet. The company's future could change dramatically if its new parent company (Thoma Bravo, a large investment firm) decides to sell Betterview within the next few years, which could disrupt the team and confuse employees about stock rewards.

Why
01
AI pressure: ZestyAI. ZestyAI already sits with half the top 50 carriers and ships agentic tools Betterview hasn't matched yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Verisk, CoreLogic. Both dominate adjacent property data but haven't shipped a competing imagery-AI product to take carrier share. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its aerial capture infrastructure and 200-plus embedded carrier workflows are hard to rip out fast.
What would change this call
ZestyAI announces new top-50 carrier wins or agentic-AI (Zorro Discover) rollouts through 2026. Shows ZestyAI extending carrier share and product lead over Betterview.
Betterview or Nearmap ships a matching agentic-AI product within 12 to 18 months. Shows Betterview closing the product gap rather than falling further behind.
Thoma Bravo initiates an IPO or sale process for Nearmap. Signals a liquidity event that could disrupt or reshuffle the Betterview team.
Key numbers
  • Nearmap revenue over $300M ARR (Mar 2026)
  • ZestyAI in ~50% of top 50 US carriers (2025)
  • 200+ carriers on Betterview-Nearmap platform (Jan 2025)
Named risks
  • Thoma Bravo could restructure, sell, or IPO Nearmap, disrupting Betterview's team and equity terms. Severity: high
  • ZestyAI's deeper carrier penetration and agentic-AI lead could erode Betterview's competitive position. Severity: medium
  • Core computer-vision analysis layer increasingly commoditized by frontier multimodal AI models. Severity: medium
  • No standalone post-acquisition revenue or headcount disclosure creates opacity for evaluating true traction. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Betterview still an independent company?
No. Betterview was acquired by Nearmap in a deal announced December 7, 2023, and now operates as 'the Betterview platform by Nearmap.' Nearmap itself has been owned by private equity firm Thoma Bravo since it completed a take-private deal on December 15, 2022.
Who owns Betterview now?
Betterview is owned by Nearmap, a US/Australian aerial imagery company, following a December 2023 acquisition. Nearmap in turn is owned by Thoma Bravo, a private equity firm that took Nearmap private for AUD $1.055 billion (about US$730M) on December 15, 2022.
Could AI replace Betterview's product?
Betterview's own product is AI/computer-vision driven, automating property inspections and hazard flagging. The risk is inverse: rival ZestyAI has shipped agentic-AI competitive-intelligence tools (Zorro Discover, 2025-2026) that Betterview hasn't matched, and frontier multimodal models are commoditizing the underlying vision-analysis layer.
Is Betterview profitable?
No standalone financials have been disclosed since the December 2023 Nearmap acquisition. Parent Thoma Bravo claims Nearmap's overall revenue grew from about $100M ARR in 2022 to over $300M by March 2026 (vendor-claimed, per a March 12, 2026 Thoma Bravo interview), but this covers Nearmap's whole business, not Betterview alone.
Who is Betterview's biggest competitor?
ZestyAI is the closest direct rival, reportedly working with roughly half of the top-50 US P&C carriers as of August 2022 and expanding into agentic-AI competitive intelligence tools by 2025-2026. Adjacent giants Verisk and CoreLogic haven't yet shipped a competing imagery-AI product as of October 2025.
What has Betterview shipped recently?
In October 2025 Nearmap launched the 'Accelerator for the Betterview Platform,' embedding Betterview's UI directly inside Guidewire PolicyCenter and InsuranceNow. In November 2025 it added a 'Home Factors' Partner Connect integration for interior/exterior home risk data feeds.
