Insurance technology companies

162 companies assessed. 101 of them, 62.3%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.

The picture

Insurance technology splits sharply into two groups. The software companies that run the plumbing behind insurers, claims systems, agency management, underwriting data feeds, are mostly fine: Guidewire, Applied Systems, Vertafore, Cape Analytics, and Sapiens sit on real switching costs and show almost no customer loss. The consumer-facing insurtechs that tried to out-tech the big carriers are a different story. Root, Lemonade, Hippo, and Clearcover built AI underwriting and app-based pricing, but Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, and Allstate copied the same telematics and pricing tools at ten times the scale and capital, so the upstarts grow slower and bleed money while incumbents keep the customers. A wave of standalone digital insurers has already failed outright: Coya, Haven Life, Hokodo, By Miles, and Loop Insurance either shut down, got wound down by their own parent, or entered liquidation. In China and Southeast Asia, super app distribution (Ant, WeSure, bolttech) is squeezing brokers like Fanhua and Huize out of their commission business. The one thing deciding survival is whether a company owns a distribution channel or a piece of infrastructure a carrier depends on, versus renting attention and hoping cheaper AI pricing is a lasting edge. It rarely is, because incumbents can copy pricing tech faster than startups can build scale.

Questions people ask
Will insurtech startups survive against big insurance companies?
Most standalone consumer insurtechs are struggling: Coya, Haven Life, Loop Insurance, and By Miles have already shut down or been wound down. The ones holding up, like Lemonade and Trupanion, are surviving but not gaining much ground because Progressive, GEICO, and State Farm copy their AI pricing tools at much larger scale.
Why are so many digital insurance startups shutting down?
Companies like Coya, Haven Life, Hokodo, and By Miles found that AI-based underwriting and pricing tricks were easy for big incumbents to copy once proven, while the startups lacked the capital and scale to compete on price for long. Several were absorbed by their own parent companies or larger rivals.
Are usage-based car insurance startups failing?
Several have. Loop Insurance entered liquidation in December 2025, By Miles is being wound down by owner Aviva, and Root Insurance is under heavy pressure as Progressive and GEICO run the same telematics pricing at far larger scale.
Which insurtech companies are considered strong bets right now?
Ping An, Guidewire, Applied Systems, Alan, and PB Fintech show the lowest pressure and highest moat scores in the sector, meaning they hold real distribution or software lock-in that competitors haven't been able to erode.
What happened to CoverWallet and Next Insurance?
CoverWallet is being folded into its own parent Aon's Affinity unit and losing its self-serve tools, while Next Insurance was bought by Munich Re's ERGO and rebranded as ERGO NEXT, both signs that standalone SMB insurtechs are getting absorbed rather than growing independently.
