The call

Beyond Identity is shrinking while it bets an aging war chest on an unproven AI-agent security product, with no new funding to cover the wait.

Beyond Identity makes login technology that does not require passwords, using hardware and biometrics instead. This used to be hard to build, but Microsoft added it free to Windows and Okta built the same thing into their popular security suite, so now companies can get passwordless login from the giants instead of paying Beyond Identity. The company is shrinking fast (fewer than 100 people, no new funding in years, and fewer people visiting their website), so the one thing that matters is whether their new AI product called Ceros, which launched in early 2026, actually gets companies to pay for it before their money runs out. If Ceros fails or takes too long to gain real customers, Beyond Identity has no Plan B.

Why
01
AI pressure: Ceros (Beyond Identity's own AI-agent-identity product). Beyond Identity is betting its survival on securing AI agents, not being eaten by them, but Ceros has no proven customers yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Entra ID, Windows Hello) and Okta (FastPass). Microsoft and Okta bundled passwordless MFA into suites customers already pay for, cutting Beyond Identity's category mindshare from 8.8% to 4.7% in a year. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Hardware-bound key architecture and a possible FedRAMP High approval could open federal deals the giants find awkward to chase.
What would change this call
Beyond Identity announces named enterprise customers or revenue tied to Ceros by Q4 2026. Would show the AI-agent-identity pivot is generating real business, not just a launch announcement.
Beyond Identity secures FedRAMP High authorization and a federal/defense contract. Would show it has carved a regulated niche the giants struggle to enter due to channel conflict.
Beyond Identity announces a new priced funding round, acquisition, or further headcount cuts by end of 2026. Would clarify whether the company can fund its pivot or is running out of runway.

Questions people ask
Is Beyond Identity profitable in 2026?
No public profitability figures exist since it is private. A third party estimate pegs revenue near $37.8M, and the company itself claimed it tripled annual revenue in 2022, but no independent financials confirm profitability as of mid-2026.
Has Beyond Identity had layoffs?
Yes. Beyond Identity cut 30 people (16% of staff) in May 2023 and had another layoff round in December 2022. Headcount fell from roughly 180 to 200 employees in 2022 to under 100 by mid-2026 per independent trackers.
Could AI replace Beyond Identity's product?
AI itself will not replace hardware-bound authentication, but Microsoft Entra ID and Okta have bundled native passwordless MFA into their suites, commoditizing Beyond Identity's core product. The company responded by launching Ceros, an AI-agent identity platform, which reached general availability in June 2026.
Who owns Beyond Identity?
Beyond Identity is privately held and venture-backed, having raised $205M total across three rounds ending with a $100M Series C in February 2022 that valued the company at $1.1 billion. No new priced funding round has been reported since, about 53 months as of mid-2026.
Who is Beyond Identity's biggest competitor?
Microsoft (Entra ID, Windows Hello) and Okta (FastPass, Identity Threat Protection) are the biggest structural threats, having built native passwordless authentication into their platforms. Among pure-play rivals, HYPR is the closest competitor, holding 12.1% category mindshare versus Beyond Identity's 4.7% as of May 2026.
What is Ceros and why did Beyond Identity build it?
Ceros is Beyond Identity's agentic AI trust layer, entering public preview on February 17, 2026 and reaching general availability on June 16, 2026 at the Identiverse conference. It enforces identity and policy checks on autonomous AI agents at the OS/process level, marking the company's pivot away from commoditized MFA.
