The call

BigHaat is profitable but growing slowly, boxed in by a bigger private rival, a free government AI advisory tool, and ITC's own version of the same feature.

BigHaat sells seeds, fertilizer, and farm advice to Indian farmers through an online platform. The company's main hook was free AI crop advice to draw farmers in and keep them coming back to buy supplies, but that advantage is disappearing fast: the Indian government launched a free advisory app in February 2026 that already reaches 140 million farmers, and ITC, a much larger competitor, offers the same AI advice for free and has signed up 2.5 million farmers. BigHaat is profitable and has real operations, but its revenue growth has stopped and it trails DeHaat, a competitor three times its size. The one thing that could matter is AgroHaat, a new export business that helps farmers sell crops internationally with proper paperwork and tracking, which now makes up 20 percent of revenue, but no one yet knows if it can grow big enough to save the company.

Why
01
AI pressure: Bharat-VISTAAR (Indian government AI advisory platform). Free multilingual AI crop advisory from the government now reaches 140M+ farmers, undercutting BigHaat's own free-advisory hook for pulling in buyers. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: ITC Limited (ITCMAARS / Crop Doctor). ITC's Crop Doctor AI advisory already reaches 2.5M farmers and 2,180 FPOs, and ITC could add input sales on top of it. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its own logistics network, input-brand tie-ups, and farmer relationships built over a decade, things a free advisory app doesn't replace.
What would change this call
BigHaat's FY26 marketplace revenue growth rate versus FY25's single-digit YoY figure. Continued flat or declining growth would confirm the advisory-hook moat is eroding.
AgroHaat export vertical's share of BigHaat total revenue over next 12-18 months. Rising past 35% at healthy margins would show a genuine new moat; stuck near 20% shows the upside thesis failed.
Whether ITC's ITCMAARS platform adds full input-marketplace transactions beyond advisory. Would show ITC moving from free-hook competitor to direct marketplace rival, cutting off farmer segments.

  • ITC's Crop Doctor reaches 2.5M farmers, 2,180 FPOs (2026-05)
Named risks
  • Free government Bharat-VISTAAR platform commoditizes BigHaat's core free advisory engagement hook. Severity: high
  • ITC's larger, corporate backed Crop Doctor tool directly clones BigHaat's advisory feature at greater scale. Severity: high
  • Revenue growth has stalled to single digit year over year while category leader DeHaat grows and turns profitable. Severity: medium
  • Inconsistent farmer count disclosures (20 million vs 15 million vs 4 million plus) raise questions about metric reliability. Severity: low
  • AgroHaat export vertical remains unproven at scale, stuck near 20 percent of revenue as of FY25. Severity: medium
