The call

BIGO Live makes real money from real people tipping real broadcasters, but nearly 90% of that money sits in one app that Apple and Google have already pulled twice.

BIGO Live lets people broadcast themselves live and receive tips (called gifts) from viewers, generating $1.53 billion a year for its parent company JOYY Inc. The business is hard to copy because people who stream there have audiences and habits built up over time, but TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitch offer almost the same thing, so viewers can easily switch. The real danger is not other apps but regulators: BIGO was removed from Apple's app store in 2023 and Google Play in December 2024 because of child safety concerns, and since BIGO makes nine out of every ten dollars JOYY earns, one more app-store ban could break the whole company.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is a tool here, not a hunter: it drives 34% of gift suggestions and recommends video, it doesn't replace the human broadcaster people pay to tip. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: TikTok Live. TikTok Live offers the same gifting model with a bigger built-in audience, pulling viewers and streamers away from BIGO. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Nearly $1.5B in livestreaming revenue and 700M+ cumulative users give it scale, but that didn't stop Apple and Google from pulling the app before.
What would change this call
Apple or Google announce a new app-store removal or restriction citing child-safety/CSAM concerns for BIGO Live. Would show regulatory risk to the ~89% revenue-concentrated core business is materializing again.
JOYY reports BIGO Ads Audience Network revenue growth rate in upcoming quarterly earnings. Would show whether ad revenue is diversifying JOYY away from livestreaming dependence as planned.
Social Entertainment segment YoY growth rate reported in Q2/Q3 2026 earnings. Would show whether BIGO Live's recent growth rebound is holding or reversing to decline.

Questions people ask
Is BIGO Live profitable in 2026?
BIGO Live's parent JOYY reported Q1 2026 total revenue of $555.7M, up 12.4% YoY, its strongest growth in recent years, and returned $332M to shareholders in 2025 plus announced a new $1.5B buyback program in Q1 2026, signaling healthy cash generation as of May 2026.
Who owns BIGO Live?
BIGO Live is operated by BIGO Technology Pte. Ltd., a Singapore-based company that has been wholly owned by Nasdaq-listed JOYY Inc. (ticker JOYY) since JOYY completed its roughly $1.45B acquisition of BIGO in 2019.
Is BIGO Live safe, given the app store bans?
BIGO Live was removed from Apple's App Store in April 2023 over advertising/privacy issues and from Google Play in December 2024 after a New York Times investigation into child exploitation content, with a reported federal investigation into CSAM-related content following that removal.
Could AI replace BIGO Live's business model?
AI is currently additive rather than a replacement threat: JOYY reported AI-generated virtual gifts made up 34% of gift consumption in April 2026, and AI recommendation improvements lifted average viewing time 5.6% quarter-over-quarter in Q4 2025, per company-reported figures dated 2026-06-01.
Who is BIGO Live's biggest competitor?

Is it risky to work at BIGO Live or JOYY right now?
JOYY's headcount has shrunk from 9,273 employees in 2019 to about 5,421 to 5,535 by December 2025 (roughly 7 to 8 percent down year over year per Revelio Labs and StockAnalysis), even as JOYY posted double-digit revenue growth and increased job postings 42.6% in 2025.
