The call

BitoPro's license and store network still work, but a 2025 hack with no compensation plan and a well-funded new rival have narrowed its room to lead Taiwan's market.

BitoPro lets people in Taiwan buy and sell crypto, with real advantages like government approval, bank connections, and 4,000 convenience stores where users can deposit cash. But these advantages are not hard to copy: any other company can get the same government approval, and a new rival called TWEX backed by big Taiwan companies (Taiwan Mobile and Fubon) already launched in 2025 with more money to spend. The company got hit hard by a hack in May 2025 that scared away users and damaged trust, plus it has to get approval again under new Taiwan rules by sometime in 2027 or 2028, which could go wrong.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI trading bots and AI-driven fraud detection touch crypto exchanges broadly, but no AI product is displacing BitoPro's local exchange role. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: TWEX (backed by Taiwan Mobile and Fubon). TWEX launched in 2025 with deep corporate backing, giving it capital and distribution BitoPro cannot easily match. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Taiwan's VASP licensing, TWD banking access, and a 4,000+ convenience-store cash network that new entrants must rebuild from scratch.

Questions people ask
Is BitoPro safe to use after its 2025 hack?
BitoPro lost $11 to $11.5 million to the Lazarus Group in May 2025, disclosed only after outside researcher ZachXBT flagged suspicious outflows, and as of June 2025 had announced no formal user-compensation plan, per BleepingComputer's June 20, 2025 report.
Who is BitoPro's biggest competitor in Taiwan?
MAX (MaiCoin Group) reportedly leads Taiwan trading volume, while TWEX, backed by Taiwan Mobile and a Fubon Group company, launched in 2025 as the first major corporate-backed Taiwan exchange, per Gate.com's November 17, 2025 ranking piece.
Will BitoPro keep its license under Taiwan's new crypto law?
Taiwan's Virtual Asset Service Act passed June 30, 2026, requiring existing AML-registered VASPs like BitoPro to apply for a new FSC license within 12 months and win approval within 21 months, or face penalties up to seven years and NT$100 million in fines.
How many users does BitoPro have?
BitoPro's own site claims over 1 million registered members and number-one market share among Taiwanese exchanges as of September 21, 2025, though BleepingComputer's June 20, 2025 reporting cited over 800,000 registered users and roughly $30 million daily volume.
Did the 2025 hack hurt BitoPro's trading volume?
Yes. Trading volume fell approximately 21 percent following BitoPro's confirmation of the $11.5 million hack, per CoinGecko data cited by Fortune on June 3, 2025, and by mid-2026 daily volume was still fluctuating between roughly $12 million and $31 million.
Could AI replace BitoPro's exchange business?
Unlikely for the core business. BitoPro's TWD banking rails, VASP registration, and 4,000-plus convenience-store cash-deposit network are not AI-replicable; only peripheral functions like customer support, KYC review, and trading bots are exposed to AI automation.
