The call

Bitpanda is growing users and revenue but its profit collapsed in a bull crypto year, and it heads into a Frankfurt IPO squeezed between a bigger Trade Republic at home and MiCA-licensed global exchanges abroad.

Bitpanda lets Europeans buy and sell cryptocurrency and other assets, and it made real money last year (371 million euros). The problem is that getting a license to do this (which Bitpanda has) is now something all the big players like Coinbase and Trade Republic can get too, so there is no secret advantage that keeps competitors out. Bitpanda's profits dropped sharply even when crypto prices were rising, and Trade Republic is already bigger in the same German and Austrian neighborhoods where Bitpanda started. The one thing that could matter is whether Bitpanda can make real money from selling services to banks through its Vision Chain business, not just from regular people trading, but that has not happened yet at a meaningful scale.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI-native trading agent or robo-advisor is yet displacing Bitpanda's retail crypto brokerage flow. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Trade Republic. Trade Republic's bigger DACH user base and broader banking license pull retail attention away from Bitpanda's crypto-first app. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. MiCA license, 7.4M users, and roughly 60% of Austria's domestic crypto trading volume.
What would change this call
Bitpanda confirms and completes Frankfurt IPO date in 2026. Shows whether the pre-IPO spending push converts into a public listing as planned.
Adjusted EBITDA margin rebounds toward 2024's €52M level in FY2026 results. Would show the 75% profit collapse was temporary IPO spending, not structural erosion.
Vision Chain or Enterprise reports bank/fintech contracts reaching 20%+ of revenue. Would confirm B2B infrastructure is becoming a real, load-bearing business line.

Questions people ask
Is Bitpanda profitable in 2026?
Bitpanda's adjusted EBITDA fell 75% to just €13M in FY2025 from €52M in 2024, even as adjusted revenue grew 16% to €371M. The company blames heavy pre-IPO spending on product, licensing and expansion, per financemagnates.com reporting from March 2026.
Is Bitpanda going public and when?
Bitpanda is preparing a Frankfurt Stock Exchange IPO targeting a €4-5B valuation, underwritten by Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Deutsche Bank, per Bloomberg on 2026-01-13. As of March 2026 CEO Eric Demuth had not confirmed a listing date.
Who is Bitpanda's biggest competitor?
Trade Republic, a larger Berlin-based multi-asset neobroker, is Bitpanda's key rival in the core DACH market and is described as bigger and cheaper in a 2026 comparison review. Coinbase and Kraken, both MiCA-authorized, are also contesting Bitpanda's European retail base.
Could AI replace Bitpanda?
No. Bitpanda's regulatory licenses (Austria FMA MiCAR authorization, UK FCA, UAE VASP) and bank custody integrations with Deutsche Bank and LBBW form a compliance moat AI cannot replicate. Bitpanda itself uses AI internally, launching an OpenAI-powered Smart Search and a Claude-based portfolio skill in March 2026.
What is Bitpanda's revenue and user base in 2025?
Bitpanda reported €371M (~$430M) in adjusted revenue for FY2025, up 16% year over year, with registered users growing 25% to 7.4 million, according to theblock.co and financefeeds.com reporting on 2026-03-12.
Has Bitpanda had layoffs before?
Yes. Bitpanda cut headcount by roughly a third to 730 employees in June 2022 during the crypto winter, per sifted.eu. Headcount has since recovered, reaching about 1,175 by December 2025 per Revelio Labs data.
