The call

Bitso runs the licensed pipes moving dollars into Mexico and beyond, and banks racing to build their own stablecoin rails are the ones to watch, not AI.

Bitso lets banks and businesses in Latin America send money across borders quickly using stablecoins, instead of waiting days through traditional banking. It is hard to copy because it has obtained special licenses from regulators in Mexico and other countries, and has built direct connections into their banking systems; Bank of America and JPMorgan are trying to build their own versions, but starting from scratch takes years. The big risk to watch: Nubank or Mercado Pago (the large fintech companies in the region) could build their own institutional settlement product for businesses, or if Mexico's financial regulators launch an investigation into Bitso's practices and impose penalties.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up as a tool Bitso uses for fraud checks and client software, not as a rival taking its business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Bank of America, JPMorgan, Citi (stablecoin platforms); Nubank, Mercado Pago (distribution). Big US banks are building their own stablecoin rails, and Nubank or Mercado Pago could bolt on institutional settlement to their huge retail bases. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Licenses in Mexico, Gibraltar, and Argentina plus direct SPEI bank integration that new entrants cannot easily copy.
What would change this call
Nubank or Mercado Pago launch an institutional cross-border stablecoin settlement product. Would show Bitso's core B2B settlement moat is being directly challenged by LatAm rivals.
CNBV opens or closes a formal inquiry into the July 2026 bitsopool withdrawal allegations. Would show whether regulatory trust, a key part of Bitso's moat, is at risk.
Bitso announces a new funding round, valuation update, or IPO filing. Would show whether investors still back Bitso at or above its 2021 valuation after 5 years of silence.

Questions people ask
Is Bitso profitable in 2026?
Bitso does not publicly disclose audited revenue or profit figures. It reports Bitso Business annualized TPV of $82B+ as of June 11, 2026, and 10M+ users, but no funding round or IPO has confirmed financial health since its May 2021 Series C valuation of $2.2B.
Could AI replace Bitso?
No. Bitso's moat is regulated banking infrastructure, including CNBV/IFPE registration, a Gibraltar GFSC DLT license, and SPEI integration in Mexico. AI is used as a tool, such as Sumsub's automated KYB tech added July 21, 2026, not a substitute for licensed settlement rails.
Who owns Bitso and is it going public?
Bitso is privately held, founded in 2014 by Daniel Vogel, Pablo Gonzalez, and Ben Peters. It last raised funding in May 2021 (a $250M Series C led by Tiger Global at a $2.2B valuation) and has not announced any new round or IPO plans as of mid-2026.
Who is Bitso's biggest competitor?
On the institutional stablecoin-rail side, Bank of America is building a competing digital-assets platform for stablecoins and tokenized deposits (noted July 20, 2026). On retail crypto, Nubank and Mercado Pago pose distribution threats by adding crypto features to their larger user bases.
What is the biggest risk facing Bitso in 2026?
A July 5, 2026 investigative report (bitsopool.com) alleges frozen withdrawals and a conflict-of-interest concern involving Bitso Mexico's director, who also heads the Fintech Mexico trade association. No CNBV sanction has been confirmed yet, but the allegations remain unresolved.
How big is Bitso's stablecoin payments business?
Bitso Business, its B2B cross-border settlement arm, reported $82B+ in annualized total payment volume as of June 11, 2026, serving 2,000+ institutional clients, with stablecoin payment volumes growing 81% year over year in H1 2026 according to Bitso's own report.
