The call

Visa keeps growing by wrapping fraud, identity, and stablecoin tools around its existing network rather than being replaced by them, while a DOJ antitrust case and Reg II caps sit on the calendar as the real pressure points.

Visa runs the largest payment network in the world, connecting banks that issue cards, stores that accept them, and the people who use them. It is hard to replace because Visa spent over 60 years building rules, relationships, and acceptance at 150 million stores worldwide; a new competitor would have to convince all three groups to switch at once, which almost never happens. The biggest threat is stablecoins like USDC or USDT and AI shopping agents that might let people pay without using a card, but so far these are tiny compared to Visa's business and the company is already working with them rather than fighting them. What could change everything is if stablecoins become so popular that people actually choose them at checkout instead of cards, but today they handle only a few billion dollars a year while cards handle many trillions.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI shopping agents (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) doing agent-to-agent checkout. Agents could book purchases without touching a card page, so Visa is building Trusted Agent Protocol to stay inside that flow instead of outside it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Stablecoins (USDC, USDT, PYUSD, RLUSD). Stablecoin settlement is growing but sits near $7B annualized against $14T in card volume, still tiny and mostly a business-to-business tool, not consumer checkout. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 150 million plus merchant acceptance points and 60 years of chargeback and liability rules that no new rail replicates overnight.
What would change this call
US v. Visa debit antitrust ruling on summary judgment around May 2027. would show whether regulators can force structural separation of Visa's debit routing.
Stablecoin checkout volume (USDC, USDT, PYUSD) reaching 5%+ of US consumer spend. would show stablecoins bypassing Visa's card rails at meaningful scale.
OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google shipping agent-to-agent payment rails outside Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol. would show AI agents routing purchases around Visa's checkout network.

Questions people ask
Is Visa profitable in 2026?
Yes. Visa posted FY2025 net income of $20.06B on net revenue of $40.00B (up 11.3% YoY) as of September 30, 2025, and Q2 FY2026 revenue accelerated further to $11.23B, up 17.1% YoY, reported April 28, 2026.
Could AI replace Visa?
No, Visa is using AI to deepen its moat, not lose it. Its Featurespace fraud-AI acquisition (closed early 2025) helped drive 28% YoY growth in Value-Added Services revenue to $3.2B in Q1 FY2026, nearly half of total revenue growth.
Who is Visa's biggest competitor?
Mastercard is Visa's closest direct rival in a stable card-network duopoly; China UnionPay processes more transactions by volume, ranking #1 globally to Visa's #2. Stablecoins are an emerging complement, not yet a checkout replacement, as of mid-2026.
Is Visa facing antitrust risk?
Yes. The DOJ's debit-network monopolization suit had its motion to dismiss denied on June 23, 2025; fact discovery closes October 16, 2026, with summary judgment motions expected around May 2027, a multi-year legal overhang.
Is Visa laying off workers?
No signs of layoffs; sources conflict on growth pace. Visa's FY2025 filing shows 34,100 employees, up 7.9% YoY (2025-09-30), while Crustdata reported 31,239 employees in July 2026, up a slower 1.5-2% YoY.
Will stablecoins replace Visa's card network?
Not yet. Visa's own stablecoin settlement run-rate reached about $7B annualized as of March 31, 2026, versus roughly $14-16 trillion in annual card volume, positioning stablecoins as a complementary settlement rail rather than a checkout replacement.
