BlackRock
Asset manager running $15.3T, owner of iShares ETFs and the Aladdin risk platform.
BlackRock's scale and platform lock-in keep growing while a private-credit fund inside its new alternatives business shows repeated stress.
BlackRock makes money three ways: running investment funds (especially ETFs, which are like baskets of stocks), selling software called Aladdin that helps other money managers do their jobs, and collecting data on private company investments through a company it bought called Preqin. It is hard for rivals to copy because Aladdin is woven into how 200 major institutions run their business, Vanguard (the only real competitor) is structured in a way that stops it from competing aggressively, and Preqin's private company data is proprietary. AI is making these advantages stronger, not weaker. The one thing that could change the picture is the HPS private credit fund: it has hit the cap on how much money people can pull out for two quarters in a row, and if that happens a third time or if the value of BlackRock's alternatives investments drops sharply, it would hurt the growth and profit story that makes the stock look expensive today.
A top-20 Aladdin client publicly switches to State Street Alpha or another platform. Would show Aladdin's switching-cost moat actually breaking, not just competitor marketing.
Court ruling or settlement in BlackRock/State Street ESG antitrust litigation within 6 months. Would show whether legal exposure stays litigation-pace or escalates like Vanguard's $29.5M settlement.
- $15.34T AUM, first manager ever to hit $15T
- Aladdin revenue up 13% YoY, ACV up 15%
- HLEND fund hit 13.3% redemption requests
- HLEND private-credit fund has gated redemptions two consecutive quarters (Mar and Jun 2026).
- Ongoing multistate ESG antitrust litigation with State Street after Vanguard settled for $29.5M.
- AUM and fee revenue are directly tied to equity market levels, exposing earnings to a downturn.
- Recurring rolling layoffs (four rounds in 18 months) despite record profits.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Vanguard | contesting | Vanguard ~$12T AUM but mutual-ownership charter blocks competing on Aladdin platform, 2026 |
| State Street | contesting | State Street Alpha remains distant #2 in platform tech vs Aladdin as of July 2026; also co-defendant in ESG litigation |
| Invesco | contesting | BlackRock filed Nasdaq-100 ETF (IQQ) April 2026 to challenge Invesco's QQQ dominance |
| Blackstone, Apollo, Ares, Blue Owl | contesting | Industry-wide private-credit gating wave hit BlackRock's HLEND alongside these rivals in 2026 |
| Frontier AI labs | contesting | No frontier AI lab has shipped a competing multi-asset risk platform as of July 2026 |
- Is BlackRock profitable in 2026?
- Yes. BlackRock reported Q2 2026 revenue of $7.08B, up 31% year over year, with an adjusted operating margin of 45.9%, its highest in about five years, as AUM hit a record $15.34 trillion, reported July 15, 2026.
- Is BlackRock laying off employees?
- BlackRock has run four rounds of layoffs in 18 months, each cutting roughly 200-300 employees (about 1% of workforce): January 2025, June 2025, January 2026, and June 2026, even as it posted record Q2 2026 profits.
- Who is BlackRock's biggest competitor?
- Vanguard, with roughly $12 trillion AUM, is the closest peer but is structurally blocked from competing on platform technology by its mutual-ownership charter. State Street Alpha and SimCorp are distant challengers to BlackRock's Aladdin risk platform as of July 2026.
- Could AI replace BlackRock?
- Unlikely soon. BlackRock has shipped AI features like Aladdin Copilot and Preqin AI Research Assistants (May 6, 2026) directly into its proprietary Aladdin platform, and Aladdin subscription revenue grew 13% year over year in Q2 2026, suggesting AI is reinforcing rather than displacing its moat.
- Is BlackRock's private credit business at risk?
- There is stress. BlackRock's $26B HPS-managed HLEND private-credit fund triggered its 5% quarterly redemption cap in March 2026 (9.3% of NAV requested) and again in Q1 2026 (13.3% requested), disclosed June 12, 2026, amid an industry-wide gating wave.
- Who owns BlackRock?
- BlackRock is publicly traded (NYSE: BLK) with no controlling owner. As of mid-2024 disclosures, top shareholders were Vanguard (9.08%), BlackRock itself via employee and treasury holdings (7.02%), and State Street (4.95%), with over 80% institutional ownership.
