Insurance companies

189 companies assessed. 11 of them, 5.8%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.

The picture

Insurance is not being disrupted by AI so much as it's being reshuffled by who uses AI and distribution scale better. Mutual insurers and state-backed giants like Nippon Life, New York Life, MassMutual, Tokio Marine, and LIC are largely untouched because they don't answer to shareholders chasing growth and they own their distribution, whether that's career agents or sovereign backing. The real action is inside markets: bank-distributed insurers are eating pure-play insurers' lunch. SBI Life and HDFC Life are pulling ahead of LIC and each other through branch networks, not AI wizardry. In Korea, DB Insurance is widening its auto insurance lead over Samsung Fire using AI dashcam fault tools, a case where AI itself is the weapon. Health insurers face a different fight entirely, tied to Medicare Advantage and Medicaid policy shifts rather than tech, with Molina Healthcare losing Medicaid enrollment fastest among its peers. The one thing deciding outcomes here is distribution reach paired with underwriting discipline. Insurers that own how customers reach them, whether through agents, bank branches, or government contracts, hold their ground. Insurers selling commodity policies through someone else's channel are the ones watching competitors close in.

Questions people ask
Will AI replace insurance companies?
Nothing in the current picture shows AI replacing insurers outright. Instead it's changing who wins inside the market, like DB Insurance using AI dashcam tools to pull ahead of Samsung Fire & Marine in Korea's auto insurance business.
Is LIC losing market share to private insurers?
Yes, SBI Life overtook LIC on individual WRP share in December 2025, and HDFC Life is also gaining ground, both using bank-branch distribution that LIC's agent network can't fully match.
Will UnitedHealth survive AI era healthcare changes?
UnitedHealth remains in a strong position with a moat score of 8, but it's losing some Medicare Advantage members to Humana, CVS Aetna, and Elevance amid broader enrollment declines of about 2.8 million tied to program changes.
Why is State Farm losing auto insurance customers?
Progressive has overtaken State Farm as the top US auto insurer by growing premiums faster, while State Farm's auto book has stayed flat despite its large agent network.
Are Japanese life insurers safe from AI disruption?
Nippon Life, Dai-ichi Life, and Tokio Marine all show low pressure scores around 2 with no visible customer loss, largely because mutual ownership and dominant agent networks insulate them from the kind of app-based competition hitting other markets.
Is Molina Healthcare in trouble?
Molina is losing its protection, losing Medicaid enrollment faster than any of its Big Five peers at 5.8% as UnitedHealth, CVS Aetna, Centene, and Elevance Health win more state contracts.
