The call

Bluesky has a protocol few can copy but a shrinking user base, unproven revenue, and a bigger rival eating the open-social story it was built on.

Bluesky is a Twitter-like social network where you can take your account and followers to a different server if you want to. This is genuinely hard for Meta or X to copy because their whole business depends on keeping you locked in. The real problem is that Bluesky's daily users dropped 40% last year, while Meta's Threads (which does something similar with portability) is growing much faster and has way more money behind it. Bluesky has made money only from selling custom web addresses and promised a paid subscription tier that still has not launched, so it is burning through its $123 million in funding. The one thing that could flip this around is if Bluesky's user numbers stop falling and its paid subscription actually ships with real revenue, but right now both those things are either trending wrong or overdue.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI-native app is pulling users away; the pressure comes from Meta's scale in feed-ranking and moderation automation, not a chatbot rival. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meta Threads. Threads has passed X in mobile DAUs and is federating via ActivityPub, absorbing the open-social migration Bluesky counted on as users leave X. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. AT Protocol gives users portable accounts and pluggable moderation that third-party apps can build on, something Threads can't easily copy.

Questions people ask
Is Bluesky Social profitable in 2026?
No. As of April 2025 Bluesky's only confirmed revenue stream was hosting custom domains for handles, and its promised Bluesky+ subscription and creator-payment features still had not shipped as of mid-2026, despite being announced in late 2024. The company relies on its $123M in raised capital rather than revenue.
Who owns Bluesky Social?
Bluesky Social PBC is a privately held Delaware public benefit corporation headquartered in Seattle. It is owned by employees and investors, with former CEO Jay Graber holding the largest individual stake. Investors include Bain Capital Crypto, Blockchain Capital, True Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, and the Knight Foundation, per its March 19, 2026 Series B disclosure.
Is Bluesky losing users to Meta's Threads?
Yes, evidence points that way. Similarweb data reported via Forbes showed Bluesky's daily active users fell about 40% year over year through October 2025, while Threads reportedly overtook X in mobile daily active users in early 2026, capturing more of the open-social migration Bluesky had counted on.
Could AI replace what Bluesky Social does?
Not directly. Bluesky's core value is its AT Protocol, enabling account portability and composable moderation, an architectural moat that is not an AI-automatable task. However, larger rivals like X and Meta already run AI-driven feed ranking and moderation at greater scale, which could erode differentiation over time.
Who is Bluesky Social's CEO now?
Toni Schneider, former Automattic CEO and True Ventures partner, became interim CEO after founder Jay Graber stepped down on March 9, 2026 to become Chief Innovation Officer. Schneider was confirmed as permanent CEO on July 10, 2026, dropping the interim title.
How much funding has Bluesky Social raised?
Bluesky has raised roughly $123M across three disclosed rounds as of July 10, 2026, per Datanyze, including a $100M Series B led by Bain Capital Crypto that closed in April 2025 but was only publicly disclosed on March 19, 2026.
