The call

Nazara stays profitable in a crowded casual-gaming market, but Google's search shifts, unresolved tax fights, and bigger rivals keep pressure on margins.

Nazara Technologies makes casual mobile games (like Chhota Bheem games and Animal Jam) and sells ads around them, mostly to US players. It is not hard to copy or replace because the games use licensed characters that can be taken away, it competes directly against bigger names like Zynga and King, and AI tools now let any studio do what Nazara does. The company was also hit hard by India banning real-money gaming in August 2025 (costing it nearly 9 billion rupees) and faces huge tax demands from the government. The one thing that could matter: whether its new AI-powered game studio, Bluetile, actually makes games faster and cheaper than rivals can, or whether everyone just gets the same AI tools and the advantage disappears within a year or two.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google's AI-driven Core Search updates. Google's AI-powered Core updates cut Sportskeeda traffic, dropping its revenue about 30% in FY26 and hurting content ad income. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Zynga, King, Voodoo, Moonactive. These casual-gaming giants already run live titles competing directly for the same US mobile players Nazara chases. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A profitable, diversified portfolio of licensed IP and emerging-market gaming distribution still throws off cash even as one unit slumps.
What would change this call
Nazara's Q1 FY27 results (around Aug 12, 2026) show Bluetile/BestPlay margin impact. Tests whether the AI-native acquisition delivers durable EBITDA gains or gets commoditized.
Resolution or escalation of the combined ₹1.19 lakh crore GST show-cause notices. Shows whether a major unresolved liability materializes as a cash or provision hit.
Nodwin Gaming IPO outcome and Sportskeeda/ad-tech divestiture completion by FY28. Indicates whether restructuring unlocks value or signals forced retreat from non-core units.
Key numbers

  • Sportskeeda revenue exposed to further Google algorithm changes, already down ~30% in FY26. Severity: medium
  • Founder stake sale of 4.9% in May 2026 could signal reduced insider confidence or precede further sell-downs. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Nazara Technologies in financial trouble?
Not in an acute sense, but the FY26 numbers need a closer look. Consolidated revenue rose about 13% YoY to ₹1,829 crore for the year ended 2026-03-31, and PAT jumped roughly 61% to ₹82 crore, but that profit jump was driven heavily by a one-time NODWIN deconsolidation gain rather than organic operations.
Who are Nazara Technologies' biggest competitors?
In casual gaming, Nazara names King, Zynga, Voodoo and Moonactive as its direct peer set, all of which run casual titles at global scale. In its home Indian market, Krafton's BGMI already dominated mobile gaming mindshare as of April 2026, while domestic real-money-gaming players like Dream11, Games24x7 and MPL compete in an adjacent segment that was hit harder by the August 2025 RMG ban.
Is Nazara Technologies at risk from AI?
Yes, this is flagged as a building threat. AI-assisted production tools for asset generation, live-ops and user-acquisition creative can flatten the cost advantage of building casual games, and Nazara's move to pay $100M for Bluetile suggests it is trying to catch up on AI-driven production capability rather than already having it in-house.
What is Nazara's biggest single risk going into 2027?
The clearest watch-item is whether Nazara's gaming segment can show organic EBITDA growth, separate from acquisitions, since FY26 gaming revenue grew 107% YoY to ₹1,072 crore partly through deal-driven expansion. The company should report two consecutive quarters of 20%-or-more organic gaming EBITDA growth by May 2027 for that concern to ease, with the first real signal due at Q1 FY27 earnings on 2026-08-12.
Does Nazara Technologies have a strong competitive moat?
Not by all indications. Nazara's main protection appears to be licensing relationships in Indian cricket and kids content, rather than a durable structural edge, and it competes against far larger global casual-gaming players like King, Zynga and Voodoo as well as Krafton's dominant BGMI franchise in its home Indian market.
Is Nazara Technologies growing?
On the surface, yes. FY26 EBITDA rose 66% YoY to ₹255 crore and Q4 FY26 PAT jumped over 1,258% YoY to ₹55.7 crore, but much of this reflects the NODWIN deconsolidation gain and acquisition-driven gaming revenue rather than pure organic expansion, so the underlying growth rate is less clear than the headline figures suggest.
