The call

Booking keeps growing double digits while AI tools feed traffic into its site rather than routing bookings around it, at least for now.

Booking.com helps people find and book hotels, flights, and vacation rentals by collecting prices and reviews from thousands of properties. It is hard to replace because it has spent three decades building relationships with hotels, storing years of pricing and customer feedback, and attracting more visitors than any competitor. Google could potentially become a rival by letting people book directly through search results, but it has not done so yet, partly because it makes more money from ads. The main threat is whether AI assistants (like ChatGPT) will let travelers book trips on their own without visiting Booking.com's website, though today most travelers still prefer using the site directly.

Why
01
AI pressure: Frontier AI agents (OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini). AI agents plan trips but only 7% of travelers want AI to book autonomously; Priceline's Penny added Claude to book, not replace Booking. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Google. Google could turn search into a full booking transaction layer but hasn't shipped one, held back by ad revenue conflicts and antitrust scrutiny. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Three decades of hotel contracts, merchant-of-record payment rails, and the review/pricing data needed to run a global booking marketplace.
What would change this call
Booking's unlaunched 'Lola' AI-agent venture ships and reports early adoption numbers. Shows whether Booking can control agentic booking rather than lose ground to it.
OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google announce direct hotel-chain booking deals bypassing OTAs. Would signal frontier labs building a booking rail that could disintermediate Booking.
Booking's direct/app traffic share stays flat or falls YoY for two straight quarters. Would indicate erosion of Booking's distribution moat versus search or AI agents.
