The call

Box turned the AI threat into a governance product people pay for, but Microsoft still gives similar tools away inside M365 for free.

Box is a file storage and sharing service designed for large companies that work across multiple cloud platforms like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. The company is hard to replace because it sits in the middle of all these platforms neutrally, and big companies have strict rules about where their data can live and who can see it, which Box helps them manage. Microsoft could threaten Box by bundling similar tools into its Office 365 software, and AI chatbots could make Box less necessary if companies stop treating their files as private and locked down, but Box released new software in mid-2026 to let companies control how AI tools access their stored files, which may slow this threat. The real question is whether Microsoft will start winning away Box's largest customers by packaging everything together more cheaply, and whether Box can make money from AI features without their costs eating up profits.

Why
01
AI pressure: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini acting directly on enterprise files without going through Box. If agents from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google touch company files directly, they could bypass Box entirely unless Box governs them. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (SharePoint, OneDrive, Purview, Copilot bundled in M365). Microsoft bundles Copilot and Purview governance into M365 that most enterprises already pay for, undercutting Box on price and convenience. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Enterprises with multi-cloud setups need a neutral governance layer, not one owned by Microsoft or Google, and Box has compliance certifications built over years.
What would change this call
Box Q2 FY2027 earnings report, expected late Aug or Sep 2026, revenue vs 9% YoY guidance. Shows whether the AI pivot growth reacceleration is durable or a one quarter blip.
Microsoft ships free native third party agent governance controls inside M365. Would remove Box's main differentiator and could trigger real customer loss.
Box Enterprise Advanced tier revenue share stays flat near 10% for two straight quarters. Would indicate the AI governance product line is stalling, not converting threat to growth.
Key numbers
  • Q1 FY2027 revenue $305.9M, up 11% YoY (2026-04-30)
  • Enterprise Advanced ~10% of FY2026 revenue (2026-01-31)
  • Market cap approximately $4.15 billion (2026-07-22)
Named risks
  • Microsoft could bundle free native third-party-agent governance into M365, undercutting Box's July 2026 differentiator. Severity: high
  • Frontier-lab inference costs from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google integrations could compress gross margins as AI usage scales. Severity: medium
  • Yen and other FX headwinds flagged as a drag on Q1 FY27 results and Q2 guidance. Severity: medium
  • Headcount figures conflict across sources (2,912 to 4,384), clouding efficiency and growth trend visibility. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Box profitable in 2026?
Box guided non-GAAP EPS of about $1.56 for FY2027 and raised full-year revenue guidance to roughly $1.28 billion (9-10% growth) after Q1 FY27 revenue hit $305.9 million, up 11% YoY, as of May 26, 2026, per its earnings call transcript.
Could AI replace Box?
Unlikely soon: Box's governance, permissions, and compliance layer (SOC, HIPAA, FedRAMP) across 100,000+ orgs is what lets third-party AI agents like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini safely touch enterprise content; Box shipped governance controls for those agents on July 21, 2026.
Who is Box's biggest competitor?
Microsoft, via SharePoint, OneDrive, and Purview bundled into Microsoft 365, is the dominant adjacent threat, backed by roughly $190 billion in planned AI infrastructure capex; as of mid-2026 there's no observable share loss from Box yet, per company earnings data.
Who owns Box?
Box, Inc. is an independent public company (NYSE: BOX) with a market cap of about $4.15 billion as of July 22, 2026, per GuruFocus. KKR holds $500 million in convertible preferred equity from an April 2021 investment; there is no controlling parent.
Is Box growing faster than Dropbox?
Box posted 11% YoY revenue growth in Q1 FY27 (ended April 30, 2026), its first double-digit quarter in three-plus years, while rival Dropbox cut 20% of its workforce (528 employees) in October 2024 amid slower growth in the commoditized storage market.
What is Box Agent and when did it launch?
Box Agent, generally available April 2, 2026, is an AI agent using OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models to search, reason, and generate content across a company's Box files while respecting existing permissions, paired with no-code Box AI Studio for Enterprise Plus and Advanced customers.
