The call

BTC Markets keeps its licences and its long client base while bigger, better-funded rivals close the regulatory gap and squeeze it on price.

BTC Markets lets Australians buy and sell Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and it has been around since 2013 with proper government approval. It used to be hard to compete with because getting that approval took years, but now bigger companies like Coinbase and Crypto.com have the same licenses, and they charge lower fees (0.50% instead of BTC Markets' 0.85%), have more customers, and have raised huge amounts of money to spend on marketing and features. The company could change its story if it wins a new license called the Australian Market Licence from the government and uses that to offer new products like payments or trading tools that customers actually want to use instead of switching to rivals.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven trading tools on larger exchanges (e.g. Coinbase's AI features). AI trading assistants on bigger platforms could pull active traders toward richer, automated exchange experiences. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase AU, Crypto.com AU, Swyftx. These rivals now hold the same AFSL status BTC Markets once had alone, and undercut it on fees, 0.50% versus its 0.85%. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its AFSL, AUSTRAC registration, and 13 years of trust with 400k+ Australian clients keep it operating while newer entrants wait on licences.
What would change this call
ASIC's decision on BTC Markets' Australian Market Licence application before April 2027 deadline. Denial or delay would strip a key regulatory differentiator versus licensed rivals.
Swyftx launches payments or derivatives products and reports client or volume growth in 2026-2027. Would show a same-market rival actively converting BTC Markets' potential customers.
Independent Reserve's pricing and features under IG Group ownership through 2026-2027. Would show a newly capitalized rival closing the gap on trust and price with BTC Markets.

Questions people ask
Is BTC Markets profitable in 2026?
Unclear. BTC Markets is private with no audited financials disclosed. Third-party estimates for revenue range wildly from about $507k to $30.8M, none confirmed against primary filings, so profitability cannot be verified as of July 2026.
Who owns BTC Markets?
BTC Markets is 100% privately owned by Australian founders, with no exposure to or affiliation with other exchanges, per its own statement dated 2026-07-13. Its licensed arm, BTCM Payments, has held AFSL No. 525840 since June 2022.
Could AI replace BTC Markets?
Not the core business. Its AFSL, AUSTRAC registration, and AUD banking rails (PayID/Osko) cannot be replicated by AI tools. Support, KYC document checks, and fraud-pattern detection are the exposed workflows, but no AI-specific initiative at BTC Markets was found as of July 2026.
Who is BTC Markets' biggest competitor?
Swyftx, which secured its own AFSL and is pushing into payments and derivatives as of 2026-07-08, directly erodes BTC Markets' early-licensing edge. CoinSpot also outranks it by scale, with roughly 3 million customers versus BTC Markets' 400,000.
Is BTC Markets losing market share?
It is mid-tier: about 400,000 clients as of 2026-07-13, versus CoinSpot's roughly 3 million and Swyftx's roughly 1.5 million. Rivals like Swyftx and IG Group-backed Independent Reserve are actively expanding in the same licensed niche.
Will BTC Markets get Australia's new Market Licence?
BTC Markets notified ASIC of intent to apply for an Australian Market Licence, disclosed 2026-07-13, ahead of the Digital Assets Framework Act's full licensing regime taking effect 2027-04-09. The outcome of that application is pending as of mid-2026.
