The call

A large, state-backed hotel network losing ground to a faster-growing domestic rival while betting on a slow luxury pivot to turn things around.

BTG Homeinns runs about 7,000 hotels across China, backed by the government and owned physical buildings. The problem is that H World, a bigger competitor, is grabbing customers and growing while BTG shrinks, so the company's size and state backing do not stop H World from winning business right now. The main chance BTG turns things around is if its new luxury hotel partnership called Kempinski actually opens hundreds of new properties over the next five years as promised, but that has not happened yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: Trip.com/Ctrip AI booking assistants. AI travel assistants could route bookings around hotel brands, cutting into direct-channel loyalty BTG depends on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: H World Group (Huazhu). H World is 3.3x larger and growing 5.9% while BTG's revenue keeps shrinking, pulling share in the same budget-to-midscale segment. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. State ownership ties give BTG access to land, licensing, and franchise networks that keep the room count large even as growth stalls.

Questions people ask
Is BTG Hotels profitable in 2025?
No. BTG Hotels (SHA:600258) posted a net loss of roughly CNY -144.4 million for FY2025, with revenue of about CNY 7.61 billion, down 1.86% year-over-year, according to stockanalysis.com data as of 2026-06-30.
Who is BTG Hotels' biggest competitor?
H World Group (Huazhu, NASDAQ:HTHT), which reported FY2025 revenue of RMB 25.3 billion (+5.9% YoY) versus BTG's declining CNY 7.61 billion, and operates 12,858 hotels globally as of 2025-12-31, roughly 3x BTG's scale.
Could AI replace BTG Homeinns' hotels?
Unlikely for the physical business; BTG's ~7,000 hotels and state-linked land access are not AI-replaceable. But no evidence exists of BTG shipping AI-booking integrations, while rivals Accor and Hyatt launched ChatGPT apps in January and February 2026, exposing its distribution layer.
Is BTG Hotels laying off workers?
Headcount fell modestly: BTG Hotels had 12,433 employees at end of 2025, down 404 (-3.15%) from the prior year, per stockanalysis.com data published 2026-06-28, consistent with an asset-light franchise strategy rather than mass layoffs.
Who owns BTG Hotels Group?
BTG Hotels (Group) Co., Ltd. (SHA:600258) is controlled by the state-owned Beijing Tourism Group. It acquired Home Inns for about RMB 11 billion (~US$1.7 billion) in December 2015, completing the merger in April 2016 with roughly 65% ownership.
Is BTG Hotels stock a good investment right now?
