Rail and transport infrastructure

214 companies assessed. 57 of them, 26.6%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.

The picture

Rail and transport infrastructure splits cleanly into two worlds. On one side are state-owned or government-licensed monopolies: subways, national railways, and gateway airports that answer to almost no competitive threat because the law itself blocks rivals from building a second network. MTR, JR Central, China State Railway, Delhi Metro, Changi, and the Japanese private railways all sit here with pressure scores near zero, and nothing about AI changes that math since you cannot route around a single subway tunnel or a single national rail concession. On the other side sit airlines, ride-hailing apps, OTAs, budget hotel chains, and short-term rental platforms, all fighting on price and app convenience with almost no legal protection. That is where the damage is: Spirit Airlines has already stopped flying, SpiceJet's share has crumbled to under 2 percent, Ola is losing ground to Rapido and Uber, and Sonder and Genting Hong Kong have gone under entirely. AI shows up mostly as a tool rivals use to win bookings faster (Trip.com and Booking.com's AI trip planners squeezing HIS) rather than as a direct threat to rail operators. The one thing deciding survival here is whether a company holds a legal monopoly or concession versus fighting in an open, commoditized market where scale and lower fares from bigger rivals eventually win.

Questions people ask
Why is Asiana Airlines disappearing?
Asiana isn't losing to a rival airline, its own majority owner Korean Air is absorbing it completely, with the brand set to vanish on December 17, 2026.
Is SpiceJet going to survive?
Its position looks very weak. IndiGo holds roughly 65% of the Indian market and Air India Group another quarter, leaving SpiceJet at just 1.9% share with a shrinking fleet.
Which airports are safest from competition in Asia?
Changi Airport Group, Incheon International Airport, and Airports of Thailand all operate as the sole major gateway in their country, giving them moat scores of 9 or 10 and almost no pressure.
Is Ola Cabs losing to Uber or Rapido?
Ola has fallen behind both. Rapido is now the top app by daily users in India's ride-hailing market, and Uber's own CEO has named Rapido as the main rival, pushing Ola into a much weaker position.
What happened to Spirit Airlines?
Spirit stopped flying on May 2, 2026 and is now liquidating in bankruptcy. American, Delta, United, and Southwest pulled its budget customers by matching its fares with their own basic-economy seats.
Why are South Korean budget airlines like T'way and Air Busan struggling?
Korean Air's own low-cost arm, combining Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul, now controls about 77% of domestic capacity, leaving independent budget carriers like T'way squeezed on both routes and pricing.
