The call

Bullish is a growing, licensed exchange squeezed between bigger rivals now and a regulatory bet on tokenized securities that has not yet closed or cleared.

Bullish runs a real cryptocurrency trading platform where institutions buy and sell Bitcoin and other digital assets. It is the second-largest exchange for Bitcoin options and made $92.8 million in revenue in early 2026, growing fast. But Bullish faces bigger rivals like Coinbase, which is a household name and has far more money, so there is nothing stopping Coinbase from copying what Bullish does. Bullish's one big plan to stand out is buying a company called Equiniti to become a tokenized transfer agent, a new type of financial service using blockchain, but this deal depends on government approval that regulators keep delaying. If the government doesn't approve Equiniti by early 2027 or doesn't finalize new rules on blockchain securities by late 2026, Bullish becomes just another mid-sized exchange competing directly with Coinbase and Kraken, which would be very hard to win.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI trading bots and algo market-makers already run crypto liquidity; no distinct AI lab is targeting Bullish's exchange business directly. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase. Coinbase Prime and Kraken compete for the same institutional volume with more capital and no license Bullish alone holds. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Regulatory licenses across multiple jurisdictions plus #2 global rank in Bitcoin options give it real institutional standing today.
What would change this call
Whether Equiniti acquisition closes by Jan 2027 as targeted. Shows if Bullish's tokenization moat plan is actually executable, not just proposed.
SEC ruling on tokenized-securities rule status after mid-2026 delay. Determines if Bullish's regulatory differentiation bet has any path forward.
Whether Coinbase or Nasdaq/DTCC ship a competing tokenization stack before Bullish's gates clear. Would show larger rivals neutralizing Bullish's one claimed edge.

Questions people ask
Is Bullish profitable in 2026?
Bullish posted Q1 2026 adjusted EBITDA of $35.1M at a 38% margin on May 14, 2026, but reported a net loss of $604.9M, mostly non-cash warrant and digital-asset valuation marks rather than operating burn, per its own Q1 2026 results release.
Who owns Bullish?
As of July 12, 2026, co-founder Brendan Blumer holds roughly 25.9 to 30 percent of Bullish, Kokuei Yuan holds about 24 to 27 percent, and CEO Thomas Farley holds around 3.4 percent, per Wikipedia's ownership summary.
Is Coinbase Bullish's biggest competitor?
Yes. Coinbase, S&P 500 listed and larger, already runs Coinbase Prime serving the same institutional order flow Bullish targets, per Coinbase's March 6, 2026 product materials, while Bullish holds only 14% Bitcoin options open-interest share as of April 2026.
Could AI replace Bullish's trading platform?
Bullish's licensed matching, custody, and regulatory functions are not AI-replaceable, but the execution and analytics layer is being commoditized. Rival Kraken shipped an open-source agentic-trading CLI compatible with Claude Code and Cursor around April 2026, a capability Bullish has not matched publicly.
What happened when Bullish went public?
Bullish IPO'd on NYSE on August 13, 2025 at $37 per share, spiked to $118 intraday, and closed its first day at $68, per CoinDesk. It was also the first U.S. IPO settled substantially in stablecoins, receiving $1.15B via Solana on August 19, 2025.
Will Bullish's Equiniti acquisition succeed?
Bullish announced a $4.2B deal to acquire transfer agent Equiniti on May 5, 2026, targeting a January 2027 close, but the SEC delayed its tokenized-securities rule in mid-2026, and Bullish's U.S. derivatives licenses are only targeted for end-2026, leaving the deal's regulatory path uncertain.
