The call

Bushel still sits at the center of grain trading software, but shrinking headcount, falling traffic, and no funding since 2023 raise questions the network position alone can't answer.

Bushel runs the payment and record-keeping system that connects grain farms, elevators, and traders across North America, handling more than half of all grain that gets bought and sold. It is hard to replace because the four biggest grain companies (Cargill, ADM, Bunge, Scoular) all use it and own pieces of it, and none of them can build their own version without breaking the trust that makes farmers and smaller traders want to use Bushel in the first place. However, the company has cut its staff by roughly 40 percent since 2021, has not raised new money since mid-2023, and its website traffic is dropping, which could mean either smart cost-cutting or a sign that money is running out; the next funding round will tell the story.

Why
01
AI pressure: Treefera. Treefera shipped satellite yield forecasting in Feb 2026, sitting right next to Bushel's still-unfinished Bushel Board market intelligence tool. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Cargill, ADM, Bunge, Scoular. These grain majors invest in Bushel instead of building their own system, because a single buyer's tool would lose the neutrality traders need. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Bushel sits inside ERP systems and payment flows at thousands of facilities as the neutral layer no single grain buyer can own outright.
What would change this call
Bushel closes a new funding round (overdue since Aug 2023). Up, flat, or down round clarifies if headcount cuts reflect efficiency or decline.

Named risks
  • No funding round closed since August 2023, raising question of down-round or funding difficulty. Severity: high
  • Headcount contracted ~40% from 228 (Sept 2021) to 136 (June 2026). Severity: medium
  • Web traffic declined -12% QoQ as of June 2026, an engagement warning sign. Severity: medium
  • AI-native entrants like Treefera encroaching on market-intelligence features Bushel is only prototyping internally. Severity: medium
  • Revenue figures ($13.2M to $38.9M) are third-party estimates only, not company-disclosed. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Bushel profitable in 2026?
Bushel does not disclose financials. Third-party estimates from ZoomInfo put 2026 revenue near $38.9M, up from ~$13.2M in 2023, but these are unverified estimates, not company-reported profit figures, so profitability cannot be confirmed as of 2026-07.
Could AI replace Bushel?
Unlikely soon. Bushel's moat is a regulated payments rail via The Bancorp Bank (SOC 2/PCI compliant) plus deep ERP integrations across 3,500+ grain facilities as of 2026; Bushel itself deploys AI only as a feature layer, like its Buddy CRM assistant launched June 2025.
Who is Bushel's biggest competitor?
Treefera, an AI-native entrant, launched satellite-based yield and market-intelligence forecasting in February 2026, adjacent to Bushel's still-internal 'Bushel Board' prototype. Grain majors like Cargill and Scoular are structurally blocked from building rivals and instead invest in Bushel.
Has Bushel raised new funding recently?
No. Bushel's last closed round was a $26M oversubscribed raise in August 2023 led by The Banc Funds Company with Cargill, Scoular, and others participating. As of mid-2026 no new round has closed, over two years since that raise.
How much of the grain market does Bushel control?
As of 2026, Bushel says it powers over 50% of U.S. and Canadian grain origination across 3,500+ grain and ag-retail facilities, up from 45%+ across 2,600+ facilities in 2023-2024, per the company's own FAQ page.
What is Bushel Buddy?
Buddy is Bushel's AI assistant for CRM, unveiled at the June 2025 Buddy Seat Conference, letting ag retailers send, manage, and track customer quotes via AI. It reflects Bushel's approach of layering AI on top of its core payments and ERP integration network.
