The call

Panels are a low-margin commodity where nearly every maker loses money, so Canadian Solar's future rests on storage and project backlog, not module sales.

Canadian Solar is a large company that manufactures solar panels and battery storage systems, selling them globally with a backlog of orders worth $3.5 billion. The panel business itself is a commodity that many other companies like JinkoSolar and LONGi make just as well or better, and almost all of them are unprofitable right now, so there is no real advantage stopping competitors from taking customers away. The company's battery storage and renewable energy business has some protection through government permits and connection rights to the power grid, but that is a small part of the company. What could turn things around is if the company can make its solar panel business profitable again by raising prices or cutting costs, or if a legal case against First Solar over panel technology somehow restricts competitor imports into the United States.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI does not target this business directly, though AI-driven data center power demand could boost orders for its storage and project arm. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: First Solar. First Solar filed a March 2026 patent complaint targeting Canadian Solar's TOPCon panels, and a ruling could block U.S. imports. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. The e-STORAGE battery unit and Recurrent Energy's permitted project pipeline hold value that cheap Chinese panel rivals cannot easily copy.
What would change this call
Q2 2026 earnings (~Aug 20, 2026) gross margin print. If it lands at 13-15% without tariff refunds, core module business remains unprofitable.
First Solar Section 337 ITC ruling on TOPCon patent complaint (~6 months from March 2026 filing). Adverse ruling could restrict Canadian Solar's U.S. module imports.
e-STORAGE backlog conversion past or below the current $3.5B mark. Shows whether the one defensible, profitable segment is growing or stalling.

Named risks
  • First Solar Section 337 ITC complaint could restrict US TOPCon module imports. Severity: high
  • Persistent GAAP net losses across recent quarters amid industry wide module oversupply. Severity: high
  • Q2 2026 guided gross margin of 13-15% suggests Q1's 25.1% was a one time tariff refund. Severity: medium
  • Section 301 tariffs and anti circumvention duties on Chinese origin cells and modules remain in force. Severity: medium
  • Leadership transition to new CEO Colin Parkin in May 2026 creates execution uncertainty. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Canadian Solar profitable in 2026?
No. Canadian Solar posted a FY2025 net loss of $104 million on $5.6 billion revenue, and Q1 2026 still showed a $32 million net loss despite a tariff refund boosted 25.1% gross margin, as of March 31, 2026.
Did Canadian Solar lay off workers?
Yes. Headcount fell from roughly 20,000 to 22,000 in 2023 to early 2025 down to about 12,500 to 13,000 by December 31, 2025, consistent with industry wide cost cutting amid margin pressure.
Who is Canadian Solar's biggest competitor?
In modules, JinkoSolar, LONGi, Trina Solar and JA Solar are larger by shipment volume. First Solar is a differentiated thin film incumbent that filed a Section 337 ITC patent complaint against Canadian Solar in March 2026 over TOPCon technology.
Could AI replace Canadian Solar's business?
No, its core work is physical: module manufacturing, EPC and battery integration. AI driven data center power demand is actually a tailwind, fueling e-STORAGE contracts like a 500MW/2,493 MWh US deal announced March 2026 for data center grid support.
Who owns Canadian Solar?
Canadian Solar Inc. trades on NASDAQ as CSIQ; founder Dr. Shawn Qu remains a controlling insider and became Executive Chairman and CTO on May 14, 2026, when Colin Parkin took over as CEO.
Is Canadian Solar's stock risky?
Yes. Market cap was roughly $1.0 billion as of July 24, 2026, with a 52 week range of $9.41 to $34.59; shares dropped about 26% pre-market after the March 19, 2026 Q4 2025 earnings miss.
