Industrial materials and energy
88 companies assessed. 46 of them, 52.3%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.
The industrial materials and energy sector is not being disrupted by AI software so much as it is being reshaped by two collisions: Chinese manufacturing scale crushing margins in solar, wind, and batteries, and AI data centers creating sudden new demand for steady power. Companies that sell a physical commodity with real switching costs, industrial gases, grid electricity, nuclear fuel, hold up well. Linde, Air Liquide, EDF, Vattenfall, CGN, and the big Chinese state generators show almost no pressure because their customers cannot easily leave a pipeline or a grid connection. The losing side is anyone making hardware that China can build cheaper at bigger scale: solar panels, wind turbines, EV batteries. LONGi, Siemens Gamesa, SK On, Gotion, and EVE Energy are all being squeezed by the same handful of Chinese giants, CATL, BYD, Goldwind, Envision, Jinko, Tongwei, on price and volume. Some companies already lost outright: Meyer Burger, Sunnova, and Heliogen are gone or absorbed. The new wrinkle is AI power demand, which is pulling capital toward nuclear, geothermal, gas turbines, and fuel cells, rewarding Bloom Energy and Fervo Energy while leaving older players like Plug Power and Ormat defending ground they used to own outright. The one thing that decides survival here is whether a company's product is a commodity someone else can make cheaper, or infrastructure a customer is locked into.

- Will Chinese solar companies put western solar makers out of business
- It has already happened in some cases. Meyer Burger liquidated after Jinko, LONGi, Trina, and First Solar out-priced it, and even LONGi itself is now under pressure from fellow Chinese makers Jinko, Trina, and JA Solar in a shared oversupply glut.
- Is Plug Power going to survive the hydrogen shakeout
- Plug Power is under heavy pressure, scoring near the bottom on staying power. Bloom Energy has taken the AI data-center power story Plug was chasing, and Air Products and Air Liquide still hold the traditional hydrogen customers.
- Are industrial gas companies like Linde and Air Liquide safe from disruption
- Yes, based on the evidence here. Both show almost no revenue pressure because customers like chip fabs and hospitals depend on their pipelines and on-site plants and have no easy substitute.
- What happened to Sunnova, Meyer Burger, and Heliogen
- All three no longer exist as independent companies. Sunnova went through Chapter 11 with Sunrun and Tesla Energy absorbing its customers, Meyer Burger liquidated under Chinese panel price pressure, and Heliogen was absorbed into Zeo Energy Corp as battery-backed solar displaced concentrated solar heat.
- Is nuclear power a strong bet in the AI energy boom
- State-run nuclear operators like CGN, SPIC, and EDF show very low pressure and high staying power, and companies like Westinghouse are gaining ground as data centers push demand for steady power.
- Will EV battery makers like SK On and Gotion survive against CATL and BYD
- Both are under heavy pressure. CATL and BYD control the large majority of global and Chinese EV battery share, leaving SK On squeezed between US-only orders and Gotion holding roughly 4.5% against CATL's 39%.
- Further capacity cuts or plant closures announced by Wacker Chemie, SolarEdge, or Siemens Gamesa
- New hyperscaler power purchase agreements signed with Fervo Energy, Bloom Energy, or nuclear operators like Westinghouse
- Consolidation or bankruptcy filings among mid-tier battery or storage makers like SK On, Gotion, or Fluence
