Capterra
Software review site with 2M+ verified reviews, now a G2 business unit after Gartner sold it off.
Capterra's reviews still show up everywhere AI answers questions, but the clicks that used to pay for it are drying up while it becomes just one brand inside G2.
Capterra collects software reviews and sends buyers to vendors in exchange for payment. It built a huge collection of reviews and ranks high in Google searches, but AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Perplexity now answer questions by giving shortlists directly without sending people to Capterra's website. Capterra's old way of making money (getting paid when someone clicks through) has dropped by one-third to nine-tenths since AI took over search. Its parent company G2 recently bought Capterra cheap and is trying a new plan: instead of selling clicks, they want to sell the review data itself to software companies. The big question is whether this new data business can make money faster than the old click business dies away.
G2 publicly reports revenue or client counts for Intent Studio, MCP, or AI Blueprints within a year. Would show whether data-licensing revenue is offsetting the referral-traffic decline.
Gartner's next SEC filing discloses further purchase-price adjustments on the $110M Capterra sale. Would show whether the deal's valuation is still shrinking post-close.

|---|---|---|
| G2 | losing to | Historic chief rival G2 acquired Capterra outright, deal closed 2026-02-05 |

- Is Capterra still owned by Gartner?
- No. Gartner sold Capterra, along with sibling brands Software Advice and GetApp, to G2 for approximately $110.0M combined, in a deal that closed February 5, 2026, ending Gartner's ownership that began in September 2015 for a reported $206.2M.
- Could AI replace Capterra?
- AI chatbots and Google AI Overviews are already eating into Capterra's referral-click business, with review platforms reporting organic traffic declines of 33-92% as of April 2026, even though Capterra's reviews still account for a large share of AI Overview citations in the category.
- Is Capterra profitable?
- Capterra has never disclosed standalone financials. Third-party estimates vary widely, from about $32.1M (CompWorth, April 2026) to $44.7M (ZoomInfo, July 2026) in revenue, and neither Gartner nor G2 has published profitability figures for the unit.
- Who is Capterra's biggest competitor?
- Capterra's historic chief rival, G2, became its parent company after acquiring it on February 5, 2026. Other competitors include TrustRadius and sibling brands Software Advice and GetApp, now also owned by G2.
- Will the Capterra brand survive or get folded into G2?
- As of July 2026 Capterra still operates as a distinct business unit within G2, but analysts note growing database overlap among G2, Capterra, Software Advice, and GetApp, leaving open the question of eventual consolidation.
- How much did G2 pay for Capterra?
- G2 paid approximately $110.0M combined for Capterra, Software Advice, and GetApp together, per Gartner's 10-K covering the deal that closed February 5, 2026, a steep markdown from the $206.2M Gartner reportedly paid for Capterra alone in September 2015.
